{"id":6031,"date":"2013-12-19T21:59:13","date_gmt":"2013-12-20T05:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/grace-filled.net\/?p=6031"},"modified":"2013-12-19T22:26:25","modified_gmt":"2013-12-20T06:26:25","slug":"7-quick-takes-favorite-christmas-songs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/grace-filled.net\/?p=6031","title":{"rendered":"7 Quick Takes: Favorite  Christmas Songs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/grace-filled.net\/7qt.jpg\" alt=\"7 Quick Takes\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Why yes, I am aware that we have one more Sunday of Advent before Christmas starts.  \ud83d\ude42  I am usually teh Scrooge at this time of year because Christmas is a religious holiday for me, and I&#8217;m not amused at the secular celebration of it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt1\"><\/a><strong><a href=\"#qt1\" style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\">&#8212; 1 &#8212;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;2000 Decembers Ago&#8221; sung by Joy Williams.<\/strong>  I first heard this on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.klove.com\" title=\"KLOVE\">KLOVE<\/a> yesterday while waiting for my prescriptions at <a href=\"http:\/\/walgreens.com\" title=\"Walgreens\">Walgreens<\/a>.  (I was in my car in the drive-thru lane &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/walgreens.com\" title=\"Walgreens\">Walgreens<\/a> isn&#8217;t playing anything this religious in their stores.)  I love the words and I love the haunting quality of the music.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;margin-top:15px;margin-bottom:15px;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Joy Williams - 2000 decembers ago\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4W8K3OhxVSw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt2\"><\/a><strong><a href=\"#qt2\" style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\">&#8212; 2 &#8212;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Go Tell It On the Mountain&#8221; sung by NEEDTOBREATHE.<\/strong>  I love this Christmas carol enough to sing along in the car when it plays.  (OK&#8230; that isn&#8217;t a stretch for me &#8212; I sing along to everything.)  I love the encouragement to tell aloud the news of Christ&#8217;s birth.  I also have good memories of being on a Christmas train ride 25 years ago when I first heard it.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;margin-top:15px;margin-bottom:15px;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Go Tell It On The Mountain\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H_TnSwrNeWY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt3\"><\/a><strong><a href=\"#qt3\" style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\">&#8212; 3 &#8212;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;The Huron Carol&#8221; sung by the Canadian Tenors.<\/strong>  I love how this carol combines the Christmas story with elements of Huron culture.  It dates back a few hundred years and was written by a French Jesuit priest (St John de Brebeuf, SJ).  It&#8217;s also one I remember from attending Midnight Mass with my grandfather.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;margin-top:15px;margin-bottom:15px;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Huron Carol\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DgPeEvUl06Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt4\"><\/a><strong><a href=\"#qt4\" style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\">&#8212; 4 &#8212;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Gabriel&#8217;s Message&#8221; by the Good Shepherd Band.<\/strong>  This is a Basque carol and I love its haunting quality.  The Good Shepherd Band keeps its plainsong sound and there are beautiful harmonies.  The instrumentation is fairly minimal and enhances it rather than detracting from it.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;margin-top:15px;margin-bottom:15px;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gabriel&#039;s Message :: Good Shepherd Band\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dQ5wmFi9sfA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt5\"><\/a><strong><a href=\"#qt5\" style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\">&#8212; 5 &#8212;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;For Unto Us A Child Is Born&#8221; from Handel&#8217;s <em>Messiah<\/em>.<\/strong>  I sang the Messiah with the San Jose Symphonic Choir for their &#8220;You-Sing-It&#8221; one during high school and college though this has been one of my favorite choruses since I was a kid.  It&#8217;s one that I can sing from memory (for both the soprano and alto parts) and it figured into <a href=\"http:\/\/odb.org\/2013\/12\/19\/the-son-is-given\/\" title=\"Our Daily Bread: The Son Is Given\">today&#8217;s devotion<\/a> from Our Daily Bread.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;margin-top:15px;margin-bottom:15px;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"For unto us a Child is born - Handel\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/owcn6fgYwpw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt6\"><\/a><strong><a href=\"#qt6\" style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\">&#8212; 6 &#8212;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;The Rebel Jesus&#8221; sung by Jackson Browne.<\/strong>  I first heard this song (and this album) in December 1991 (my family is hugely into the Chieftains and we&#8217;ve seen them in concert) and it&#8217;s been a favorite of mine since then.  It brings to light some of the not so sweet aspect of Jesus&#8217; life at a time of the year when his innocence and sweetness as a baby seems to be the focus.
