Kym. Kym and I met via Livejournal more than 10 years ago. We comiserate about faith things, cat herding, life, and just… everything. She baked muffins and cookies for the NICU staff at Daniel’s hospital, sent me baby clothes and baby cookbooks when he was born, and has kept me as sane as she can in the midst of everything. She was recently diagnosed with stage 1 uterine cancer and it’s looking more and more like a hysterectomy is going to be necessary to wipe out the cancer. She’s self-employed and without insurance so she needs to raise $60,000 for the surgery, anethetists, hospital stay, etc. If you can help at all, hop on over to Kym’s Hysterical (Not) Hysterectomy and toss a few bucks her way. If you happen to know of any grant program that can help her out, please also let us know.

Trader Joe’s Coffee Latté and Cream Bars. These are beyond awesome. Granted, they’re tiny (about 1/2 the size of a popsicle) but they’re low-calorie (90 calories per bar) and low-carb (9g of carb per bar) so they’re a good indulgence, especially when I’ve had to give up my iced vanilla lattés. I’d post a picture but Trader Joe’s doesn’t have one on their site.

Tiga

These two memories. When we lived in Minnesota, I had two wonderful women who were supportive of me. There were two times when we had visitors in the congregation and one or the other of them introduced me by saying, “This is Jen. She’s our pastor’s wife but she’s also a wonderful person in her own right. She’s also a talented musician and knows her Bible!” I’m bringing them up not to toot my own horn but because I really liked being told that I had worthwhile gifts that were separate from my husband. I’m still in contact with one of them and she is a serious source of encouragement for me.

Empat

Postcrossing. I’ve been postcrossing for 3 years now and have Beth Anne addicted now. It’s fun to receive the postcards from all over the world and find out what other people find important. Tonight, I got one from Russia from a man who has a set of vintage Russian alphabet ones and he has a project going to send them all over the world. I got “A” for “Angel” (although the word “angel” is written in the Cyrillic alphabet).

Lima

My body. I’ve had body images all my life because I’ve always been the fat kid or the short kid for whom major retailers don’t make clothes. This meant no Gap khakis in high school and having to roll up the legs of my jeans. Lands’ End used to be really good for this because they would hem pants to my inseam for free. (Their selection now is craptastic at best — thankfully, my postpartum fat jeans are still going strong 4 years later.) I’m also built stocky with no chest (thanks PCOS!) so shopping is a pain and since having Daniel (and gaining 40ish pounds since gallbladder surgery despite eating well and exercising), I feel like a whale. Doing the whole charting what I eat is helping because it’s keeping the bad stuff out of my diet (or mostly out) and it’s showing me where my weak spots are. Jon is also really reiterating how much he thinks I’m beautiful as is and how much all the flaws I see on me are invisible to him. For the first time in years, I’m actually starting to be OK with myself.

Go love up Hallie and the others.

Five Favorites: My Favorite Websites (I)

Five Favorites

I thought I’d start doing my favorite websites this week. This will be a multi-week series so if there’s a subject you want covered, simply leave it in the comments.

Before I start, could y’all do me a favor and pray for/send positive thoughts to Hevel? He’s a participant in this meme and the Quick Takes and he’s been in the hospital with encephalitis for almost two weeks now. Thanks!

Pirmas

Online Bible. Have you ever wondered what the 23rd Psalm sounds like in Czech? What about John 3:16 in Amharic (the language of Ethiopia)? Bible Gateway and The Unbound Bible are my two favorites. Bible Gateway will give you straight text while a href=”http://unbound.biola.edu/” title=”The Unbound Bible”>The Unbound Bible will let you compare translations side-by-side and has a ton of resources for translation/Bible study/word studies. If I need to know what a Scripture reference is about quickly, I instinctively go to Bible Gateway.

Antras

Online Translation. I’m wholeheartedly a Google person so I love Google Translate. It has many more languages than Bing Translator though Bing Translator includes two dialects of Klingon. I also am a user of Google Chrome so Google Translate automatically pops up for me.

Trejetas

Online Bookstore. I’m going with BarnesandNoble.Com on this one because I have a NOOK. I think if I had a Kindle, I would be solely an Amazon.Com girl. (I use Amazon.Com for everything else.)

Ketvirtas

Blogging Software. I think there’s a WordPress button somewhere on my front page. 🙂 I’ve been using WordPress and its predecessor b2 for 10 years now. I haven’t been able to create my own templates from scratch since v. 1.5 (summer of 2005) but I still love it and could probably write my own template if I would bother to learn PHP.

Penktas

Feed Reader. As Google Reader will be heading the way of the dodo this summer, I’ve jumped on the Bloglovin bandwagon. It took a few days to adjust but it is an improvement over Google Reader as the feed is grouped by the order things are posted rather than being grouped by site and the Patheos.Com blogs actually display in full text in the reading frame.

Go love up Hallie and the others.

Fitday My endocrinologist wants me tracking my diet and carbs and such. I started using FitDay many moons ago (OK… like maybe 7.5 years) and abandoned it after a few weeks because I didn’t necessarily need to track my eating. I wish I’d gone back to using it 6 years ago when they diagnosed me with pre-diabetes because I think I would have done a lot better and maybe even lost some weight. I don’t have a smartphone so the app my doctor suggested is a moot point and I just went with FitDay again. I’m already finding it useful because it has shown me some bad patterns in terms of my carb consumption.

Agony of the Leaves This is the latest in Laura Childs’ mysteries about the owner of a tea shop in Charleston. (My favorite genre of mysteries are the “cozies”.) I got addicted to her books a few years ago and in addition to this one, I have another one on request at the local library.

NOOK A family friend gifted me with a NOOK two years ago and I’m still loving it. It doesn’t have a glow screen (which is probably not a bad thing — I’d be up all night reading otherwise) and it’s first generation (I think) but that’s fine for me. I probably would have bought a Kindle if I’d spent my own money but now I can’t imagine life without it. It’s indispensable on long car trips (I have a flashlight in the glove compartment specifically for reading at night with it) and it saves a huge amount of space on my bookshelves. Best of all, they have a free book every Friday and I’ve found some pretty interesting books that way.

George Foreman Super Champ Family Size Grill With having to watch my diet, I decided to break out my George Forman Grill again… only to find out that the teflon is coming off and it doesn’t heat up as fast. Given that it’s 11 years old and not all that expensive to replace, I put some Amazon.Com giftcards toward it. I’m looking forward to its arrival because I tend to grill something daily right now. (It’s quick and allows me to have flavor without the calories.) Now if I could keep a certain black cat off the counter after I use it… *glares at the pair of glowing eyes at my feet*

I Will Not Apologize

I’ve been wanting to write this particular post for month, especially after an election season where people on both sides were beaten up and bloodied by the time all was said and done. I’ve held off because I was afraid of losing friendships but it’s also meant that I’m walking around on eggshells on what should be my blog and that I’m only posting memes because I don’t want to offend people.

So here it is..

I refuse to apologize for the following things.

[-] For believing homosexuality is a sin. I have looked at this issue from top to bottom in multiple Biblical languages, read various theologians on this, prayed about it, and I’m still of the conviction that it is a sin. This doesn’t put me on the same level with the members of Westboro Baptist Church or the pastors in the US and Uganda who believe that all GLBTQ folks should be executed. It’s a hard position to hold because I do have friends who are GLBTQ whom I love dearly. Some of them know where I stand and some of them don’t — I don’t make a huge issue out of it. I also honestly don’t know what to do with same-sex marriage because some of my GLBTQ friends have been in committed relationships longer than some of my hetero friends have been married and I’m not touching that. It would be easy to just come down one way or another but I can’t do that. Instead, I’m sitting in ambiguity, praying for guidance on each specific situation, and trying to have patience with online friends who are sifting this blog for any sign of me not towing their particular doctrinal line (on either side because I have friends on both sides of the issue).

[-] For voting for Obama. Does anyone reading this entry *not* know that I as a conservative Christian voted for Obama? If this shocks you and disgusts you, feel free to go read blogs that are more soothing to you. I could not, in good conscience, vote for Romney/Ryan because I honestly did not support some parts of their platform which apparently have been turned into a religious dividing line. Guess what? God is not a Democrat or a Republican and while I sometimes wonder how people can vote the way they do and call themselves Christians, I know that they’re probably saying the same thing about me. God gave me a brain and intended me to use it. I did and I have no regrets.

[-] For supporting the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) a.k.a. Obamacare. I find it ironic that Republicans went through 33 wasteful votes (which cost 7 figures a piece) to repeal it when the essences of it are from Gingrich’s “Contract with America” from the 1990’s and Romneycare in Massachusetts. I have a child with special needs and this means that his healthcare is prohibitively expensive. The PPACA provisions mean that insurance companies can’t place a lifetime cap on my million dollar baby and that he can never be denied insurance. I am positively giddy and counting down the days until the rest of the provisions go into place in 2014 which prohibit insurance companies from denying coverage based on pre-existing conditions for me which would render me uninsurable right now if I didn’t have insurance through Jon’s denomination.

[-] For not giving out the password for protected entries. I’ve actually had people email me and harass me because I won’t give them the password. Really? Do they honestly think that I’m protecting those entries purely out of selfish enjoyment? Unless I trust you, you aren’t getting the password.

Orphans Do you see these two cuties?

BrettKaia

Brett (on the left) needs a mama and Kaia (on the right) has a family who needs help raising the funds to bring her home so she can start kindergarten (hopefully this autumn). If you can help out at all, click on their pictures. Please and thank you!

NCIS. I am TOTALLY looking forward to the season finale next week. I’m sure it will be a cliffhanger given the nature of the show but I’d love to know who exactly is going after Gibbs. I’m also delighted to see Colin Hanks acting. I never saw his father in anything on TV but I’m a fan of his movies.

— 3 —

The Big Bang Theory. Tonight’s episode of The Big Bang Theory was actually pretty cute. It was nice seeing Howard doing his imitations of various actors and I thought the way Sheldon handled things with Amy was surprisingly good, given the nature of his character. (I think you have to watch it to understand what I mean and you can do that on the CBS website for free.)

Such a helpful boy. I spent last weekend in San Jose with my parents. On Saturday, I was feeling really sleepy due to allergy-induced sleep deprivation and while sitting on one of my parents’ loveseats in the living room, I dozed off sitting up with my hands in typing position. My mom came in and started talking to me before realizing that I was fast asleep. I apparently slept that way for a good 2 hours so my mom put Daniel to work in the yard with her. She would hand him cuttings of something and he would walk over to the yard waste container and put it in there. She also had him do that with the lemons that were on the ground. Well, he started doing it with the lemons on the tree once the ones on the ground were gone. Thankfully, my parents’ lemon tree is abundantly stocked with lemons so this wasn’t the end of the world. Still, I love that he was able to help my mom that way. 🙂

Fail-proof smoking cessation plan. I promise I am not making this up. This might just be me but I think Nicorette is cheaper than the fines and jail time for the assault charge. Heck, the UCD Medical Center cafeteria gives it to people for free because the medical center is a smoke-free campus.

— 6 —

Medical humor. Have you ever worked in medicine (i.e. doctor, nurse, receptionist, etc.)? I recommend Doctor Grumpy in the House. He’s an anonymous neurologist who does not suffer fools gladly and also posts about stupid criminals and interesting war stories. I recommend his blog highly — I’m in the process of reading through several years of his archives right now.

— 7 —

The required Quick Take on baseball. The Giants played several games with the Dodgers last weekend so it’s probably good that I wasn’t home — Jon is a Dodger fan and I support the better team the Giants. I might have been a wee bit… enthusiastic about the fact that THE GIANTS SWEPT THE SERIES. We got our butts kicked by Philly but that’s OK — it wasn’t LA so I can live with that. 😉

Because “House M.D. is off the air… I am reading through the archives of Dr. Grumpy in the House. He’s a neurologist and talks about his more… interesting patients as well as reporting on boring medical symposiums, stupid criminals, and interesting war anecdotes.

Old Navy flip flops. I am a BAD pastor’s wife because I’ve worn these to church on a few (OK… MANY) occasions because I’m having to chase a 4 year old around. It’s also what I wear a lot of the time when I don’t have running shoes on and I can’t be barefoot. (I’m in a perpetually discalced state most days.)

Louise Penny. I discovered one of her latest books randomly at the library and immediately checked it out to read. It takes place in a monastery where one of the monks has been killed over the chants they do every day as part of their daily prayers. Penny manages to write with a chiaroscuro-like view where you see both the inner darkness of the person as well as elements of light. It’s what makes her novels so excellent.

Frappucino love. Starbucks has a new frappucino or two out these days and I’m dying to try the Caramel Ribbon Crunch one. It’s one where it would have to be my breakfast because of the calories and the fact that it packs 3 meals worth of carbs. I must resist the temptation…

Arabic Easter song. A friend of mine who is an Orthodox deacon’s wife posted this on Facebook and I wanted to share it because it’s an amazing video. Lebanese Christians are effectively doing a flash mob to sing an Easter praise song which actually sounds less strange to my ears than much of the music coming out of the Antiochian Orthodox churches and the Coptic church. (Sorry Tasoni — I’m still getting used to your church’s music. It’s beautiful but it sounds… different to my Western ears.)

Go love up Grace and the others. Grace is hosting this week while entertains guests and enjoys the chrism scent on Mr. Charlie after his baptism.

7 Quick Takes: March Madness

March Madness. The stupid basketball games have started again (later than usual) so I’m grumping about my CBS shows being pre-empted. Because I couldn’t care less about who wins, I thought I’d share some non-basketball alternatives, of which there seem to be an abundance this year.

He needs a mama. Wanna help? Head over to his page and share it on Facebook/Twitter/whatever. His mama is out there and I hope we can find her soon. Want updates on the process? Like him on Facebook.

Go show her family some love!

Search term fun. I installed Jetpack for my WordPress a month or so ago which means that I get to see the search terms that come in for my site. There aren’t a lot because I chose to hide it from spiders and search engines for a long time but occasionally some interesting ones come through.

The current interesting one: “serving with a prickly pastors wife”

I am so honored. 🙂

Bible student essays. The professor who runs Bible Students Say… is grading tonight. *rubs hands gleefully*

Some gems:

“God used diff. people to write the Bible b/c diff. author writing abt the same story paid attention the things the other author different.”

“I don??t think not following the bible as is doesn??t mean you’re criticizing the bible & people who are offended need to get with the ages”

“I think, as a believer somebody needs to be bless with an understanding of the bible from the holly spirit to interpret it right.”

Little Bear. Please pray for Little Bear. He was born with deformed legs (which honestly made him much cuter) and he won a contest to be on the cover of Modern Cat Magazine earlier this year. He is currently at the vet having one of his legs fixed and will be back home with his mommy on Sunday. Truthfully, he’s stinking cute as is (his feet add to the cuteness) and he doesn’t even know that his feet aren’t normal. He manages to beat up his siblings and get around just fine but his mommy wants him to have full function. He has a Facebook page here.
