7 Quick Takes — Occupying Lent, Veggie Burgers, and #ashtag Loveliness

7 Quick Takes

Wow! My first couple days of Lent have been sooooo amazing! I’m just gaining so many insights into my faith and… yeah, I’ll just shut up now and move on to my Quick Takes.

Please help my friend Paula win an award from Circle of Moms. Her daughter Anna has Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD) and has been waiting two years for a liver transplant. Their transplant blog was nominated to be in the Top 25 Moms with Inspiring Families. If you’re a mom, please go vote. At last glance, she was #26 or #27.

I have a mirror site for my Lenten writings on WordPress.Com. Want to read my Lenten writings (which are crappy thus far) but do not want to have to look at my eeevvvvvvvvviiiiiilllllll Obama button? Go here. You’re welcome.

Need some ideas for food on meat-free days? Priest’s Wife has a great entry on meatless means for manly men. My recommendations are Gardenburgers and various Morningstar Farms products (both in your freezer section). I can personally vouch for both brands’ iterations of Portabella/Mushroom Lovers burgers and spicy black bean burgers. I’m also a fan of Morningstar Farms Tomato & Basil Pizza Burgers and their veggie corn dogs. (Truthfully, I prefer them to regular corn dogs.) I can’t speak highly of Morningstar Farms breakfast products because the texture is just wrong to me and I’m also mildly allergic to eggs (i.e. no breakfast sandwiches) for me. My vegetarian husband, however, loves their veggie bacon and veggie sausage patties and links.

I know that the vast majority of you are Catholic but I have a source for interesting and worshipful music. Ron Pogue at Unapologetically Episcopalian posts Morning and Evening Prayer every day and includes a Youtube video of sacred music each time. Some of it is Anglican chant (which is incredibly beautiful) and some of it is classical music. He’s also on Facebook which means that you can get it in your news feed… if you haven’t given up Facebook for Lent. 😉 If I didn’t already have a devotional that I use, I’d totally do Morning Prayer using his site and my Book of Common Prayer.

Along the lines of interesting and worshipful music for prayer, I can’t recommend Pray As You Go enough. I used to use this (in addition to Our Daily Bread) during my hour-long commute to work in Montana. It was mostly silent prayer but there was always some kind of music at the beginning and it spanned the spectrum from Taizé to chant to Ladysmith Black Mambazo. I also used the silent time after I hit mile marker 379 on I-15 to pray for people.

My thanks to Kate for coming up with the idea of posting pics of our #ashtag loveliness on Twitter. (Thanks to Beth Anne for compiling them.) My tweets are protected so here are my pics of me rocking my #ashtag.

For want of a simple salt, a woman and her baby died today. What? You didn’t hear about that on the evening news? Oh wait… that’s because it happened in the Third World! Quoting the Preeclampsia Foundation website:

Globally, preeclampsia and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a leading cause of maternal and infant illness and death. By conservative estimates, these disorders are responsible for 76,000 maternal and 500,000 infant deaths each year.

One of the treatments for preeclampsia (to keep it from jumping to full-on eclampsia) is magnesium sulfate (MgSO4), a simple salt that we refer to in the USA as “Epsom salt”. The shortage of a solution of that salt (the concentration needs to be specific) and the lack of a medical professional trained in its usage means the mother and baby die. Want to help combat that problem? Sponsor me in the Promise Walk for Preeclampsia.

FOR TODAY February 20, 2012

Outside my window… gray and yucky when I got up. Much nicer now though probably still cold.

I am thinking… that it was a good idea to give Daniel some Benadryl after his second (?) vomit episode this morning. He’s on juice and Cheerios at the moment and we’ll add stuff in as he does better.

I am thankful… for the goulash and spaetzle I brought home with me from my parents’ house. It was two meals worth that I didn’t have to cook.

In the kitchen… the leftover goulash and spaetzle. Also coming up with meatless ideas for this week.

I am wearing… blue maternity shirt and penguin pajama bottoms.

I am creating… ideas for posts for my Occupying Lent category.

I am going… to check on Daniel when I’m done with this.

I am wondering… why my Obama button looks so skewed on Firefox even though I re-sized it and re-uploaded the smaller version.

I am reading… Still: Notes on a Mid-Faith Crisis by Lauren Winner. I also snuck in The Chocolate Castle Clue by JoAnna Carl this weekend.

I am hoping… I don’t have a dentist visit this week given my jaw pain.

I am looking forward to… my massage on Friday and my brother and sister-in-law coming on Saturday.

Around the house… clean living room floor. Yay!

I am pondering… what to write about on Wednesday when I start my Occupying Lent series.

A favorite quote for today… “The real problem is not why some pious, humble, believing people suffer, but why some do not.” — C.S. Lewis

One of my favorite things… teryaki chicken at my favorite sushi/noodle bar.

A few plans for the rest of the week: PT tomorrow, speech and Ash Wednesday on Wednesday, OT on Thursday, massage and cleaning on Friday, and time with family on Saturday.

Some of My More Interesting Spam

The spam refers to this entry.

The following time I learn a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as much as this one. I imply, I know it was my option to read, but I actually thought youd have something attention-grabbing to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about one thing that you possibly can repair should you werent too busy looking for attention. Regards, Best Furniture Manufacturers

How pathetic is it that this is my most interesting spam?

Reflections on Tonight’s Episode of “Harry’s Law”

Yes, I’m aware that it’s technically Sunday morning. Deal with it.

Baseball has taken over FOX (meaning that I can’t watch COPS on Saturday nights) so I was surfing around and found “Harry’s Law” to be an acceptable substitute. The main case of the episode was involving a girl who was being held criminally liable for a classmate’s suicide. The blogger (Sela) had posted that her classmate was gay, had called her names, and had called on her classmates to be “tuna helpers” and nod to let this girl know that they knew that she was lesbian. Said girl killed herself by car exhaust poisoning. The jury finds Sela not guilty of being criminally liable for the death but it takes Harry (Kathy Bates) pointing out that the lesbian girl had pretty much had to keep her sexual orientation a secret from everyone including her family/friends/church. Harry also points out that it’s the mean people in media who get the attention.

It was interesting casting because Camryn Manheim played the prosecuting attorney. She’s known for playing characters that aren’t the norm. She’s a huge advocate for gay rights, fat acceptance, and generally the rights of women. (She’s also a UC Santa Cruz alum. Go banana slugs!) Given her work on “The Practice”, she was the perfect choice.

One of the main issues was cyber-bullying and the fact that there have been a rash of suicides resulting from it. Nobody can say that Sela was out of line in what she posted and the Camryn Manheim character accuses her of recruiting her classmates to torment this girl. She has a snark blog and by being a snark, she gains some popularity. It’s kind of a reminder that our words have consequences and we can unintentionally cause someone’s life to fall apart by what we write.

My first inclination as my blog is a form of therapy is that I should be able to dump all my feelings here and people need to suck it up. I may criticize people in the media (example: my intense dislike of our former president) but I never go after people in my real life. There are several reasons for this: in order for this blog to be therapeutic, there has to be somewhat of a disconnect between it and my real life; and in many of the places Jon served, what I wrote could have been influential or it could have really screwed him as things did in 2005 when people got together and cut-n-pasted my blog entries together. (I don’t even want to think about what would have happened if they could have gotten into the passworded stuff.) Basically, things work better when my readers aren’t living in my community and part of my every day life.

Having said all that, I would never advocate the kind of things that Sela did on her site. My faith would preclude that kind of thing and honestly, it would really ruin things for Metanoia and their community outreach. Being a pastor’s wife, I do represent the church whether I like it or not and whether I’m intentionally trying to represent or whether I’m being my usual hermit self. If I was still living in Montana or Minnesota, the kind of stuff that Sela did would be a BIG DEAL because it dealt with someone’s sexuality and identity. In northern California, being gay is not a huge deal (even in the smaller town in which I life) and I can’t see that someone coming out or not coming out would be a big deal. (I can think of five or six things that rank higher on people’s minds.)

Truthfully, I’m also just not that popular or widely read. It isn’t like what I write is stirring people to political action or causing people to vote a certain way. The only thing I might do is increase advocacy about a cause or issue.

Blogging Etiquette

I’ve had someone follow me from another blog and comment on an entry in an aggressive fashion. The offender got his comment deleted and I went into my domain dashboard and I.P. banned him. This is totally annoying to have to do so I thought I should lay out some rules of blogging etiquette.

01.) Don’t use someone else’s blog as your bully pulpit. If you have something to say that you feel needs to be expressed that strongly, GET YOUR OWN FREAKING BLOG.

02.) If you don’t like what someone has to say, suck it up. I’ve disagreed with a number of things that people have to say on their blogs. Given the diversity of blogs I read, I could probably get offended by at least half of them on a given day. However, life is too short to hold grudges so I just suck it up.

03.) If you absolutely MUST speak up, do it gracefully. If the issue is so grievous that you just have to speak up, do so gracefully and respectfully. We can all agree to disagree and maybe what you have to say will give the blogger something to think about.

04.) No chasing commenters. Do not chase someone from a blog where they leave a comment to their own blog to chastise them. It’s rude, will cause your comment to be deleted, and will cause you to be I.P. banned.

05.) Brevity is best in comments. Long comments get sent to my moderation queue on WordPress so any response over a few paragraphs long is going to not post because the program views it as spam. Be brief — save the long diatribes for your own blog.

06.) If you’re just too tempted to rip a blogger a new one, it probably means that you’ve been online too long and need a hobby. I recommend knitting, crocheting, chainsaw juggling, or cake decorating.

Just a few thoughts.
