Five Favorites: Miscellanea (XXI)

Five Favorites

One

My mother-in-law. I’m not saying this just because she watches my kid on Saturday mornings so I can sleep in. (OK… it’s more than just Saturday mornings.) The woman is freaking brilliant, generous with her time and energy, spoils my two cats, and bakes me the best chocolate-peppermint vegan cupcakes on the planet. She also has yet to whack me upside the head with a pillow to get me up in the mornings and I appreciate her restraint.

Two

OPI Nail Polish. The stuff on my toes right now is “Princesses Rule!” and it’s a nice light pink color with glitter. I’m also a fan of “Pedal Faster Suzi!” which is usually what I end up with if I get gel on my hands and lacquer on my toes. (For the record, I had never had my nails done ever until I turned 29 and was down in southern California on a call interview for Jon. My 16 year old self is rolling her eyes.)

Three

“Tacky” by Weird Al. It’s awesome as all of Weird Al’s music is. (It’s a parody of Pharrell’s “Happy”.

Four

“Hedge of Protection” by Tim Hawkins. I quote this one at least daily. I also have to make sure I’m not drinking anything when certain friends of mine are praying for me because I *will* spit out whatever I’m drinking when they pray for a “hedge of protection” around me. (This would be the source of the chai on my dashboard.)

Five

“Just, Just, Father, Father” by Tim Hawkins. I am totally guilty of using the word “just” too often in prayer.

Go love up Heather and the others.

7 Quick Takes: Things I Do to Avoid Dealing With My Life

7 Quick Takes

I’ve got some things going on in my offline life at the moment that are terrifying me (and which I can’t talk about on this blog which is why I’m being vague) so this is how I’m avoiding things related to that.

— 1 —

Facebook. If I played all the games I get invited to play, I’d be attached to my laptop 24/7. I stick mainly to Words with Friends and Scrabble. Still, even on days when I only read certain lists of people, it’s a good way to kill a few hours.

— 2 —

Reading. I’m currently re-reading A Year of Biblical Womanhood when I’m sitting down and eating meals. I don’t read at night because I’d just stay awake doing so and unfortunately, I have a little boy who wakes me up at 7 asking for “mo chee”. (Translation: “more cheese”.) My favorite genre is murder mysteries and I love being transported to another locale that way for a few hours.

— 3 —

Advocating for orphans. It puts my problems into perspective. By the way, Brett (the little boy on my sidebar) needs a mama. If you think you might be his mama, click on his picture with all possible speed. Currently, I’m crocheting a baby blanket to raffle off to raise money for his grant.

— 4 —

Netflix. When the house is quiet, I tend to binge on Netflix. My current addiction is Leverage.

— 5 —

Blogging. If I put down every thought in my head, I would probably max out my server space and annoy all of you. Still, it’s what is keeping me sane at the moment and helping me to avoid thinking about everything going on.

— 6 —

Sleeping. I’m a huge fan of it, especially since I don’t get much of it these days. If I had my way, I’d be able to shift my wake-up time from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. permanently.

— 7 —

Watching TV. I’m a forensics show junkie. I get irritated if people call me between 7 and 9 p.m. on Tuesday nights because it’s NCIS night. I also have other shows that I watch and follow religiously.

Someone needs a mama. Do you see this sweet boy?

Brett

Brett needs a mama. Are you his mama? Click on his picture for more information.

— 2 —

Prerequisite baseball take. My boys (the Giants) are at the top of the NL West… and the Dodgers are five games back. Yeah… trying not to be annoying toward Jon.

— 3 —

Big Bang Theory. OMG… season finale!!!! I wonder what we’re going to see when the show returns in September with regard to Sheldon’s train trip. I was also bummed out to see that the comic book store burned and I’m kind of amused that Stewart is now joyfully taking care of Howard’s mom when every other nurse quit on them.

— 4 —

Leverage. I freaking love Leverage!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am up WAAAAAAAAAY past my bedtime watching it. I do still adore Parker but I also love Eliot (the hitter) as well. I’m watching the one where they’re scamming the Bernie Madoff guy and they’re doing the science fair-musical thing.

— 5 —

Ginger-flavored Altoids. Unfortunately, they don’t sell them here so I’m imbibing large quantities of Trader Joe’s Ginger Mints to help with inflammation. My stomach has been happy in addition so yay?

— 6 —

The weekend. My evil twin and his wife will be down this weekend for the communal birthday celebration. I haven’t seen Sean (the evil twin) since March and I haven’t seen the girl since Thanksgiving. They used to live about half an hour north of us so we used to do the communal birthday celebration at our place. They moved up to Tacoma last August so now my parents are the most centrally located people. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing them.

— 7 —

Books. I finished Something Other Than God (Jen Fulwiler) and Girl at the End of the World (Elizabeth Esther) this week so I’m now re-reading A Year of Biblical Womanhood by Rachel Held Evans. If you haven’t read it (or any of them), I recommend all three of them.

Five Favorites: Miscellanea (XVIII)

Five Favorites

I haven’t done a “Miscellanea” one in ages!

One

Leverage. My mom has addicted me to Leverage. I am seriously in love to the point that I’m up late watching episodes on Netflix. My favorite character has to be Parker though I’m a fan of Eliot as well.

Two

Benedictines of Mary. I am quite addicted to the recordings done by the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles. They are my go-to when I’m trying to get to sleep, when I’m working, or when I need some help quieting myself.

Three

Iced chai tea lattés. Yes, I’m aware that the ones at $tarbux are chai-flavored milk. This seems to be my go-to drink when I get anything from $tarbux these days as I’m not enamored with their iced vanilla lattés.

Four

Vanilla non-fat Greek yogurt from Trader Joe’s. It isn’t overly sweet like the stuff from Yoplait. It’s also half of the carb load of the Yoplait stuff which would explain it.

Five

Quiet. It’s why I stay up past a normal bedtime — I get quiet in the living room and a time to journal, blog, and/or pray. I don’t know that it’s the Evangelical “quiet time” necessarily but it’s a time for me to wind down and get centered.

Go love up Hallie and the others.

7 Quick Takes: Catching Up on News

#BringBackOurGirls There have been people posting the names of the girls that were kidnapped in Nigeria. Some have decried that, saying that it could put the girls in more danger and also stigmatize them if they are found and the Boko Haram have raped them. Here is a link that has the names and a call to pick a name and pray. In the name of keeping the girls safe but also picking a name to pray for, I’ve chosen Mairama Y. as the girl for whom I’ll be praying.

— 2 —

Mixed marriage. It’s baseball season which means that there’s a friendly rivalry in our house between my boys and Jon’s team. Currently, my boys are at the top of their division. Wait… what’s that, Jon? Your team is 2.5 games behind. *slaps forehead* I had no idea!

— 3 —

OMG Big Bang Theory!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How can I avoid posting a spoiler alert regarding what happened on the Big Bang Theory tonight? I know! I’ll use Pig Latin. eonard-Lay oposed-pray o-tay enny-Pay and-ay e-shay aid-say “es-Yay”.

— 4 —

Special intention. For those who have been praying for our special intention, thank you. Please keep praying for it.

— 5 —

Blankies. Daniel already has a blankie my mother-in-law made for him out of Dodgers fleece so I tied one with Giants fleece last week. He is currently wrapped in it… next to Jon. I may or may not be snickering over here.

— 6 —

Orphans. Do you see this darling boy?

Brett

Brett needs a mama. Are you his mama? Click on his picture for more information.

— 7 —

Jen Fulwiler’s book. I’m in the middle of Something Other Than God and it is A-freaking-MAZING. I’m a convert from atheism to Christianity and I’m having some “OMG-her-too?????” moments.

7 Quick Takes: Kelly’s Lobster, A Mama for Brett, and a Plug for the Promise Walk

7 Quick Takes

Kelly got a Liebster Award and tagged everyone with a last name between G and P. Both my legal and married names count so…

— 1 —

Favorite creamer for your coffee. If I use one at all, it’s probably vanilla-flavored. I need my coffee to taste like ice cream.

— 2 —

Favorite cartoon show from your childhood. Easy. The Smurfs. My parents transferred all of our tapes of them over to DVD a few years back.

— 3 —

Your go to meal on Fridays in Lent. These days I’m having problems eating because of stress so my big meal for the day is usually clam chowder in a bread bowl from Panera. Otherwise, it’s a simple salad, apples with peanut butter, or Greek yogurt.

— 4 —

Blogger you’d like to meet in person (besides Kelly, obviously.) My friend @katerintree on Twitter and any of the #Cathsorority chicas.

— 5 —

A book everyone else raves about that you can’t stand. The Promise-Driven Life by Rick Warren — I think I threw the book against the wall at least 5 times daily while attempting to read it.

— 6 —

Orphans. Do you see this handsome boy?

Brett

Brett needs a mama. Are you his mama? Click on his picture for more information.

— 7 —

Promise Walk for Preeclampsia. I’m the survivor chosen to speak this year and I would greatly appreciate it if you would sponsor me.

One

This Guinness commercial. My godmother and her husband have had border collies for about 20 years and said dogs are big on herding people. This totally made me laugh so I had to send it to them.

Two

Fr. James Martin, S.J. His new book, Jesus: A Pilgrimage came out yesterday and there have been some videos put out by his publisher with him talking about it. This is one of them:

Three

Playlist 4 Pontifex The mildly irreverent men at The Jesuit Post created a Spotify playlist in honor of the first anniversary of Pope Francis’ election. It’s 45 songs suggested by their Facebook and Twitter followers. You can find it here.

Four

Lent Madness Think of it as March Madness but between saints and other revered people in the Episcopal Church. The website is incredibly fun and it’s an interesting way to learn about new saints. The website for it is here.

Five

Yoplait Greek yogurt I’ve been living on it for the last few weeks because my stomach has been clenched from stress. I’m a fan of the vanilla-flavored nonfat yogurt.

Go love up Hallie and the others.
