7 Quick Takes: Thursday Is The New Friday Edition

7 Quick Takes

— 1 —

TGIT. I don’t have classes on Friday (there aren’t many at the college) so today is the end of my school week. Given my workload (2 online tests/midterms, a massive homework list for my Records Management class, and a problem set for Accounting), I’m happy to be DONE.

— 2 —

Women’s March huddle. Action #2 for the Women’s March was to host or attend a huddle. There wasn’t one in Mount Vernon so I signed up to host one. They’re supposed to be for 10-15 people… and we had THIRTY-FIVE tonight from all over the county and even further south. I was facilitating and thankfully didn’t have to do much because people were connecting and discussing on their own.

Seriously jazzed, y’all.

— 3 —

#NeverthelessShePersisted I want this shirt, y’all! It would go so well with this shirt.

— 4 —

The actual letter. Senator Elizabeth Warren might not be able to read it at the confirmation hearing for Senator Jeff Sessions (Senator Jeff Merkley was later able to read it) but I can *TOTALLY* share it as a US citizen. 🙂 Read it here.

— 5 —

Melissa McCarthy on SNL. It wouldn’t be so freaking funny if it wasn’t so accurate. It honestly blows my mind that Trump’s press secretary can’t handle the press. (You’d think it would be part of the job description!)

— 6 —

For Kelly. Kelly needs this picture.

Kelly needs this picture.

See you in court. Trump’s immigration ban lost AGAIN. I cannot understand why he is so surprised… unless he seriously didn’t think that the judicial branch keeps the executive branch in check, just as the legislative branch checks and is kept in check by the other two branches. Sucks to be him, I guess.

One

Listening to Gregorian chant in a dark room. It’s been a stressy few weeks with Daniel having medication issue and being sick. I slept most of Sunday and Monday and I took some Ativan tonight to chill me out. The sounds of the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles are very therapeutic.

Two

My MS Word midterm. I was going to challenge the class to see if I could avoid taking it but I’m seriously glad I chose to just take it. I’ve learned so many things about how to put together documents and make them pretty. The next time I do a NaNoWriMo challenge, I could probably make my manuscript publishable on LuLu or whatever Amazon’s self-publishing arm is.

Anyway, one of the four required projects was to create a specials sheet for a restaurant and we were told to just go in and have fun with what we were given. There’s a midterm discussion and it has been a blast to see what other people have done and why they chose to go certain directions with their project.

Three

The beauty of where I live. I cannot express in words how much I love northern Washington and the sight of evergreen trees outside my window every morning. There are also beavers, deer, and other animals that come and hang out in the area. Trees are calming and I love that it’s only a short drive to Puget Sound where I can watch the water.

Four

The word “wholeness”. It’s my word for the year. The unraveling of my marriage last year left me very fractured internally and I’m trying to figure out how to put the pieces back together. It’s definitely going to be a journey this year but a worthwhile one.

Five

My morning latté. There are people boycotting $tarbux over their declaration that they’re going to hire 10,000 refugees in the next 5 years after the immigration ban was announced by the Trump administration.

My response:

My opinion on the Starbucks boycott.

(The bottom is supposed to read #coffeewithouthate.)

Go love up Bonnie, DeBalino, and the others.

For Today…

Simple Woman's Daybook

Looking out my window… dark. It was cold, rainy, and windy with temps in the 40’s. Definitely a day to stay in!

I am thinking… about the complete fustercluck created by the Trump administration with T-Rump’s executive order on Friday. Added on and potentially worse is the fact that Trump shook up the National Security Council, removing people who actually *KNOW* something about national security and instead naming his white supremacist advisor to it. #SoAshamedofThePresident #TraitorInChief

I am thankful… for Federal Judge Ann Donnelly who issued the emergency stay preventing some of the people affected from being deported. I am also profoundly thankful for all the lawyers who rushed to airports around the country to help out those affected, working pro-bono.

One of my favorite things… having a governor who goes down and protests with the people at Sea-Tac.

I am wearing… jammies. Church clothes were a navy blue fitted tee, my black paisley skirt, my black cardigan, black tights, and my black flats. After church, I traded my skirt and tights for jeans and my cardigan for a navy fleece.

I am creating… documents for my MS Word Skills Assessment.

I am watching… reruns of “The Big Bang Theory”.

I am hoping… T-Rump’s executive order can be thrown out completely on the grounds that it’s unconstitutional. I’d also like Steve Bannon taken off the National Security Council but that might be a bit too much to hope for this week.

I am learning… about reversing entries in accounting.

In my kitchen… Mom made garlic parmesan chicken for Sunday dinner.

In the school room… Daniel has tomorrow off for a teacher in-service day.

Post Script… here is the GoFundMe site for the mosque in Texas that burned down right after T-Rump issued the executive order.

Worth thinking about.

A moment from my day…

Maybe I've been a bit too political this weekend.

How To Completely Torpedo Any Progress Made By the Pro-Life Cause

Sunday was the 44th anniversary of Roe v. Wade so a lot of people are choosing to talk about abortion and the pro-life/pro-choice debate this week. I’ve been pretty busy so I didn’t know if I would get to blog on it but going through my image downloads from the last week and seeing this screenshot changed my mind:

Do I wanted to be associated with the pro-choice banner?

The answer I really wanted to give to the above question: “Yes! By far, I would rather be confused with a pro-choice person! Why? Because pro-choice people aren’t complete jerks about everything!!!”

Granted, there are people on both sides who are complete jerks about their position but I encounter this far more often in the pro-life movement than I do with my pro-choice friends. I don’t know if it’s because the pro-choice position allows for people to be fine with me making my choices and someone else making theirs or because the majority of my friends on the pro-choice side are fine with people disagreeing with them, but it really does feel like the pro-life/anti-abortion movement shoots itself in the foot on a daily basis.

Here are some ways that pro-lifers completely torpedo their cause:

[+] Calling any pro-choice person a “baby killer”. Since when has name-calling ever solved anything? Most of my pro-choice friends agree that abortion is murder and support it only in cases of rape/incest or if the life of the mother is in danger. They themselves would not get an abortion and find that name really offensive, enough so that most of them would probably run the other direction rather than have a conversation with the 40 Days for Life people.

[+] Protesting with pictures of aborted fetuses. I remember being at Urbana 2000 and seeing a picture of a child that had been aborted on the sign being held up by an Operation Rescue protestor who had come to picket the conference. (For those who don’t know, Urbana is a MASSIVE missions conference put on by Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, an evangelical organization for college students.) Seeing that poster didn’t make me automatically pro-life — what it did was make me want to never be associated with the cause at all. (Not to mention, WHO THE HELL DIDN’T DO THEIR RESEARCH AND FIGURE OUT THAT 99.99% OF THE PEOPLE AT THE CONFERENCE WERE PRO-LIFE AND THEIR PRESENCE THERE WAS POINTLESS?!?!?!?!?) I know people who are pro-life but who will never take their kids to the March for Life in DC or any of the local marches that take place across the USA because they don’t want their six year olds traumatized by those pictures.

[+] Making catty comments about how you don’t know *ANYONE* who has had an abortion nor would you ever be friends with someone like that. I would say with almost complete confidence that you probably *DO* know someone who has and making a statement like that can make that person feel incredibly isolated in addition to increasing their pain. For me, the single event that I can point to as the point at which my pro-life conversion started was when I was at an event at my college church and one of the other students there ended up confessing to me that she had an abortion after being raped. Her entire demeanor changed when she told me and I could see the intense pain on her face because it wasn’t a decision she wanted to make or was proud of making. In the last 18 years since, other friends of mine have told me about theirs because I am apparently caring and non-judgmental enough that they feel comfortable telling me. None of the women I know who have had one are remotely proud of it and many of them hide a great deal of pain because people make thoughtless comments about how horrible they must be.

[+] Opposing abortion and/or birth control but supporting the slashing of programs like WIC which help moms feed their kids. Hypocrisy, much? The reason WIC was started by former President Jimmy Carter was to take away reasons for women to get abortions. He felt that by providing mothers with a resource for feeding their young children, some of them might keep their babies. Daniel received WIC for four years and I honestly want to throatpunch politicians who want to cut programs like this but also oppose abortion. I mean, if you’re going to insist that women stay pregnant, the least you can do is to not make it harder for them to take care of their kids.

[+] Making nasty comments like the one the person made to me in the screencap above. Some of the most moral and caring people I know are pro-choice. If it came down to the choice of being associated with them or associated with some of the people I know who are pro-life, the pro-choicers would win hands down because I know that they would have my back if something happened to me and *HAVE* had my back at those times. There are people in every movement who are good/bad/kind/rude/whatever and you cannot paint all of the people on one side with a broad brush.

I’d like to close with this quotation by former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop:

The American ideal is not that we all agree with each other, or even like each other, every minute of the day. It is rather that we will respect each other’s rights, especially the right to be different, and that, at the end of the day, we will understand that we are one people, one country, and one community and that our well-being is inextricably bound up with the well-being of each and every one of our fellow citizens.

Simple Woman's Daybook

Looking out my window… dusk. The high was in the upper 40’s today according to Weather Underground. (I was in bed trying not to puke.)

I am thinking… about how to structure my homework due dates this week. I have one assignment due tomorrow (technically two but the second one can be turned in late) and a test in that class to do that is due on Tuesday night. After that, I have work due for another class on Tuesday and thankfully, my other class has a due date of Thursday.

I am thankful… for the almost 5 million marchers in the US and another 300,000 worldwide who took part in 673 marches (including two in Antarctica) yesterday for the Women’s March on Washington. I couldn’t participate because of the kidlet so I cheered people on instead.

One of my favorite things… whoever runs the site for P22, the mountain lion in the LA Hills. They put a pussy hat on him. 😀

I am wearing… jammies. Church today was a blue-green long-sleeved shirt and black slacks. I didn’t make it more than halfway through before I had to leave and go home to go to bed because the smell of someone’s coffee was making me feel nauseated.

I am creating… nothing at the moment after finishing my pussy hats this week.

I am watching… NCIS re-runs.

I am hoping… this doesn’t turn into the stomach virus that landed Daniel in the ER on Friday. (Thankfully, I have Zofran if it’s needed.)

I am learning… about special journals and subsidiary ledgers.

In my kitchen… Dad is making spaghetti for him and Mom. I’d be joining them for dinner if I wasn’t feeling so crappy.

In the school room… Daniel is chomping at the bit to go back tomorrow.

Post Script… for those who claimed that pro-lifers weren’t welcome at the March this weekend, go read what Cammie has to say on the subject.

Shared Quote…

So much for silly hats!

A moment from my day… My favorite sign thus far:

Even introverts marched!

{five favourites}: Things To Do Instead of Watching the Inauguration

#5Faves

It’s probably no secret that I find T-Rump to be a distasteful deplorable person and his administration to be a trainwreck in the making. Instead of watching the inauguration on Friday, I thought I’d let y’all know what I’m planning to do.

One

Make a pussy hat (or two). Technically, I’ll be doing that this week in between homework assignments. (For those who don’t know what one is, the website is here. They aren’t pornographic — they’re pink hats with cat ears.) I’m hoping to get two made this week: one for me and one for my priest because if I can’t march on Saturday because of my bum foot/ankle, at least a part of me will be at the march in the form of a hat I made.

Two

Get ahead on homework. I don’t have class on Friday so I try to get ahead on homework if I can. I’ll have a test on Monday/Tuesday so I’ll also need to get a pre-test done.

Three

Watch all the NCIS re-runs I have on the DVR. Mark Harmon is dreamy and I freaking love Pauley Perrette!

Four

Pray. With someone like T-Rump taking over, we need all the prayers we can get!

Five

Pretty much anything else. Yeah, even having my fingernails removed with pliers sounds better than watching T-Rump lie his pants off while swearing on a Bible.

Go love up Bonnie and DeBalino.

For Today… January 15, 2017

Simple Woman's Daybook

Looking out my window… sunny and around 40F. It’s a nice change from mornings when it’s 15F when I leave the house with a high in the 20’s.

I am thinking… about various homework assignments that are due in the next week.

I am thankful… that my kiddo FINALLY went to sleep around 1 a.m. after tantruming on and off for almost 9 hours. #autismproblems #ADHDproblems

One of my favorite things… soft grey kitties like the one asleep in the cat bed on my desk.

I am wearing… a long-sleeved Cougars shirt and jeans. Church clothes this morning were a charcoal grey top, my black slacks, and my black boots.

I am creating…

I am reading… My Badass Book of Saints: Courageous Women Who Showed Me How to Live by my friend Maria Johnson. I got to know her through podcasting stuff on SQPN and am really jazzed to finally get to read her book after gifting it to a number of people.

I am hoping… to finish my book today in between all of the homework on my plate.

I am learning… how to get kitty litter out of the bleach receptacle of the washing machine and the fabric softener receptacle on the dryer. *glares at Daniel* (The answer involves a toothbrush, an F crochet hook, and a dust buster.)

In my kitchen… stroganoff for dinner tonight. Yay!!! Good leftovers this week!!!

In the school room… Daniel has a four-day weekend.

Post Script… So let’s talk about how many buses are headed to DC for the inauguration vs. how many are headed there for the Women’s March on Washington. (Hint: It’s not even close.)

Shared Quote…

My sentiments exactly.
