7 Quick Takes: Ways to Have a Good Rapport with Your Church Kids

7 Quick Takes

One of my church kids from Montana just got married last month and I just found out that she’s pregnant. She was one of the few people (like 2-3) I trusted with Daniel after he got out of the NICU so I’m ecstatic for her and I know she’ll be a FABULOUS mama.

This news and other news I got via Facebook got me thinking about all of my church kids from the last 14 years. Jon and I have always made an effort to keep a good rapport with our church kids and in my case, some of them have talked to me about things that they were afraid to tell their parents. (Don’t worry — I’m aware that I am a mandatory reporter and my rule is that I’ll listen but I am not keeping any secrets that will harm them or someone else.) Given that all of this is on my mind, I thought I would share some things I found helpful as a pastor’s wife and some things that I continue to find helpful as an adult in the church.

To give my kiddos some privacy, names have been changed to those of Anglican saints and I’ll tend to combine several similar stories into one.

— 1 —

Learn their names. This one is a no brainer. I know that I hated it when people referred to me as “Pastor Jon’s wife” rather than my actual name because it made me feel like I wasn’t worth their time. And seriously, “Jen” is not to spell or pronounce. 🙂 Actually learning the names of your church kids shows them that they’re worth it. Bonus points are awarded if you remember that little Etheldreda prefers to go by “Dreda”.

— 2 —

Sit with them at coffee hour or at a potluck. I have seen occasions in churches where the adults all separate into groups and completely ignore the kids. The adults who have the best rapport with the kids are the ones who go and sit with them and talk to them. You are completely welcome to “table-surf” and go hang with the adults as well but consider spending 5 minutes talking to the kids and listening to what they are talking about. If a kid is sitting alone reading a book, go sit with them and ask them about what they are reading. You might learn something. I know that Hildegard, one of my kiddos in northern California, educated me on the Divergent series and The Fault in Our Stars.

— 3 —

If they do something amazing, congratulate them. I promise that it will not give them a big head if you congratulate little Edith Cavell Jones on scoring that winning goal in the field hockey match last Thursday. She will think it was cool that you noticed.

— 4 —

Involve them in something you are doing. When I would have to do some baking for work or for a potluck in Montana, I used to invite some of the kids over individually (usually with a parent) to come and help. Most of them were involved in 4-H or Girl Scouts so it usually satisfied some kind of badge or program requirement and it was just a fun time to get to know them.

Another fun one was when kids would come and hang out with me at community events where I had crocheting with me. They’d sit next to me and we would crochet a row together with my hand guiding their hands. One of my prized possessions is a picture that one of them drew of me crocheting at one of these events.

Karlie's pic of me crocheting

— 5 —

If you have something judgmental to say, bite your tongue. To quote the book of Ecclesiastes:

What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done; there is nothing new under the sun.

I have seen just about everything on the planet as a pastor’s wife and then as an adult in the parish. I have seen more teen pregnancies and pregnancies out of wedlock than I can count on fingers and toes. I have seen people develop drinking problems. In the last week or so, I learned that one of my kids who used to be Josephine Butler Yeats is now Joseph Butler Yeats. Whether or not I agree with the idea of people being transgendered, it is not for me to comment on to anyone in public. If you think that the kiddos are not paying attention to your words and actions on the subject, you are sorely mistaken. I have watched kids shut down completely around certain adults who desire to be Titus 2 women but who come off as shrill, judgmental, gossipy, and critical.

Probably the best example of this was when Ninian and Hilda Beckett’s daughter got pregnant by her boyfriend at the age of 21. I had someone say to me in a very catty fashion that they were scandalized and had no idea what to say to Ninian and Hilda. The response I would have loved to say was “How about ‘congratulations on your grandchild’?” (Unfortunately, I was sitting in their parlor on a pastoral visit and it seemed wrong to break out the snark while enjoying their hospitality.) When the baby was baptized at one of the churches in the parish, there were some people who were up in arms over the fact that Jon allowed this. (Another Lutheran pastor came and did the baptism.) They said these things in the presence of some of the church kids and guess who the kids went silent around after that?

You are more than welcome to disagree with someone’s decision but seriously, watch what you say.

— 6 —

Teach them how to be adults in the church. In Jon’s first two parishes, we had kids doing everything from serving as organists to ushering to lectoring to leading the nursing home services. It was great because they knew from an early age that they belonged in church and the church was interested in letting them share their gifts. I wouldn’t advocate for a 16 year old to serve on the finance committee but church councils could benefit from a youth member as could call committees. I have seen some of the youth ask better questions than the adults. 🙂

— 7 —

If you share a building with another congregation and they worship in a language other than English, try learning a few words of that language. My church in Washington has a Spanish language service and currently, they’re hanging out with us on Sundays. They’re the service that has most of the kids and it has been really wonderful to watch the adults who attend my service interacting with the kids. My Spanish is incredibly bad (I was passably good at Spanglish until I spent nine years in the Midwest and didn’t use it) and occasionally French comes out instead; but they seem to be pretty happy that I’m trying. At least, none of them are face-palming at my horrible Spanish in my presence. 🙂

— Bonus —

Be authentic in your faith. “Authentic” seems to be an evangelical buzz word these days but I think that its meaning is well understood. Being authentic in your faith means being honest about teachings with which you struggle, that you don’t know everything, and that you are persevering through because you believe in your heart that God is present in all these things. It is completely OK to say something like “this is a hard teaching for me because [insert concise and tactful explanation]” or to respond to questions they ask with “I don’t know the answer but I am willing to find it for you.” I have never had a kid in Confirmation or youth group mock me for not knowing an answer and some of them were more willing to talk to me about what they believed because I was honest with them about my faith.

Looking out my window… sunny. It was a blistering 74F today and I seem to be annoying various Californians by pointing this out. 🙂 (It was 109F in Sacramento on Friday.) I’m hoping for a pretty sunset tonight.

I am thinking… about my week and what is on my plate.

I am thankful… for the sweet woman from church who wrapped me in a prayer shawl today. It was a good surprise.

One of my favorite things… Coffee Almond Fudge ice cream from Tillamook.

I am wearing… jammies. Clothes from church were a blue-green shirt from Old Navy and stretchy black skirt that I got from Lands’ End 10+ years ago. When I got home, I exchanged the skirt for my black capris from Kohl’s.

Me with Daniel while wearing my prayer shawl.

I am creating… plans for new WIP’s on my hooks.

I am watching… “Lockup: Indiana – Extended Stay” on MSNBC. I’m kind of a forensic show junkie.

I am hoping… for good sleep tonight and that I can be competitive in the various Workweek Hustles I am part of on Fitbit.

In my kitchen… the normal Sunday fare.

In the school room… Daniel is done with ESY and school is starting on August 30th.

Post Script… I liked the list of signs that one is a counterfeit Christian. Let’s just say that I know a few people who fit the profile and the list is a warning to me to be authentic with my faith.

Closing Notes: Unless you’ve been intentionally avoiding all political news (which I think is a totally rational option for this election season), you’ve heard Trump’s criticisms of Khzir Khan and his wife Ghazala who spoke at the DNC. Their son, US Army Captain Humayun Khan, was killed by a car bomb in Iraq in 2004 while serving as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. One of Trump’s criticisms was that Ghazala was not the one who spoke at the DNC. She didn’t speak because… SHE’S GRIEVING HER SON, EVEN 12 YEARS LATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is her op-ed from the Washington Post, which I found to be very tender and very well-written.

Looking out my window… dusk. We’ve had pretty sunsets lately. I think it was in the high 70’s today?

I am thinking… about my to-do list for tomorrow.

I am thankful… for my church. Amazing worship today, amazing people, amazing sermon.

One of my favorite things… seeing the water lapping on the rocks in Padilla Bay.

I am wearing… jammies. Clothes for today were an indigo v-neck and black capris which I swapped out for a denim skirt for church.

I am creating… this entry and various emails.

I am listening to… a fascinating YouTube playlist of Christian music but from all different traditions. Right now, it’s something from Anúna which is breathtaking and speaks to the inner parts of my heart. Next on the list: St. Patrick’s Breastplate which is a favorite hymn of mine.

I am hoping… to finally get my car cleaned out tomorrow.

I am learning… why I seriously need the rest days in between Fitbit challenges! My poor feet were incredibly grumpy yesterday.

In my kitchen… I’m smelling my dad making some kind of soup for himself with chicken broth.

In the school room… my kiddo has one more week of ESY.

Post Script… I wish I’d seen this list of seven perfect replies to (politely) shut down negative people 16 years ago. It would have made various aspects of my life so much easier.

{five favourites}: Miscellanea (LXIX)

#5Faves

One

Reading Twitter instead of watching #RNCinCLE. My deepest thanks to all of my friends who are watching the Convention and live-tweeting it so that I can get the salient points without having to watch any of the foolishness. You have no idea how much I appreciate it.

Two

Padilla Bay Walking Trail. It’s an easy mile each way along the slough and depending on when you hit the trail, you’ll either see water lapping at the rocks or bare sea floor for miles. It’s a good place to go and think.

Three

Quiet. I crave it and rarely get it unless the kid is asleep or nobody is home. I’ve had a couple nights of Daniel falling asleep in his own bed (!!!) so I’ve managed to get a little bit of it in the last few days.

Four

The church I am currently attending. I’m hanging out at my grandparents’ church and while I’m still figuring out if/when I’m going to swim the Tiber, they are feeding my soul richly. Rev. Helen is a masterful preacher and it’s pretty awesome to see people singing as they’re headed to the rail to receive the Eucharist.

Five

Praise FM 106.5 I can’t get KLOVE or Air1 clearly where I am so I was station-surfing and discovered them the first week I moved up here. They play a little more variety than the other two national stations and I also discover local events that I might want to attend.

Go love up Bonnie, babystylista, and the others.

Looking out my window… sunny and in the 70’s today. I’m loving the climate here.

I am thinking… about my week and some things I’m having to sort through in my personal life.

I am thankful… for an amazing service at St. Paul’s. I felt connected and present in worship for the first time in a long time.

One of my favorite things…looking out of my bedroom window and seeing all the trees. Washington really is the Evergreen State and I am so lucky to be in a place where the developers have left some intentional green space.

I am wearing… an emerald green shirt from Fred Meyer and black slacks from Kohl’s for church this morning with my black flats from Naturalizer that have worked incredibly well for the last two years. (This is the shoe for those who are wondering.) After church, I swapped the slacks out for my black capris from Kohl’s and flip-flops from Old Navy.

I am creating… emails and this blog post. 🙂

I am watching… a Leverage marathon on ION.

I am hoping… some of the ick in my mood and in my life goes away. It’s been a hard week and a half in some respects.

I am learning… to take a really long walk before writing a difficult email or letter.

In my kitchen… frozen dinner tonight. I need to go through my cookbook collection and find stuff I can cook that actually makes me want to eat. My appetite is getting zapped by the nausea I’m having because of nerves.

In the school room… Daniel is loving ESY and continues to have good days. He seems to work well with the teachers and aides. School is definitely a positive in his life and I’m glad I resisted the pressure to homeschool him.

Post Script… I wanted to share this for all the introverts like me out there: our brains need silence!

Shared Quote… I’ve been reminding myself of this in the last few weeks on the really hard days:

Wise words from Johnny Depp.

A moment from my day… Some wonderful music from Matt Maher that is speaking to my soul:

Closing Notes: Related to one of my Quick Takes, the Cleveland Police Union has asked for the suspension of Ohio’s open carry laws for the duration of the Republical National Convention. Governor John Kasich has refused.

*facepalm* Because, you know, it’s so appropriate to see grown men with AK-47’s strapped to their backs to prove a point while 40 feet away, kids are playing on a splash pad. Again… JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN DOESN’T MEAN YOU SHOULD!!!!!!!

7 Quick Takes: RNC Stupidity, Pokémon Go, and Baseball Commentary

7 Quick Takes

— 1 —

*snickers* Someone has made a Pokémon Go app for moms called Chardonnay Go. In it, you can hunt for glasses of Chardonnay all over your neighborhood to collect. It’s not for me because I can’t drink but I can definitely see this being popular with other mamas this summer! (Yes, I know it’s a parody.)

— 2 —

Seriously, Cleveland? According to CNN.Com, guns are allowed at the Republican National Convention but tennis balls are not. There is an entire list of banned items and some of them make sense (bombs, lasers, grappling, hooks, and crowbars for example) while others are just stupid (ice chests and tennis balls). Guns seem to be missing from the “ban” list. Just because you *CAN* open carry in Ohio doesn’t mean you *SHOULD*, especially in a politically-charged atmosphere with large crowds of people.

I can conceive of this not ending well…

— 3 —

More Pokémon Go fun. The meditation garden at my Episcopal church in southern California is apparently a Pokémon gym and the statue of the Blessed Mother has many of the creatures gathered around it. Figuring that this was a good way to do outreach, the vicar attached a brace of VBS flyers around the neck of the statue. I’m wondering how many kiddos will be at VBS there this year because either they or their parents were playing Pokémon Go and happened across the flyers.

— 4 —

Donald, where’s your trousers? This is an interesting piece on “utilikilts”.

And just for fun…

— 5 —

They needed some meddling kids. The FBI just closed the D.B. Cooper skyjacking case. Whether or not D.B. Cooper lived, he got away with it. The event meant that airliners now have doors that can’t be opened from the inside (the device is named after Cooper) and there have been episodes of shows like Leverage which have touched on the case in some way.

— 6 —

Prerequisite baseball take #1. Was anyone else wondering what the MLB was thinking with those UGLY uniforms for the All-Star game? I mean, seriously? Yellow and brown together like that??? And the lettering? I’m thinking that they need fire whoever came up with those!!!

— 7 —

Prerequisite baseball take #2. Anyone want to guess whose baseball team has the best record in the country currently? 🙂 Yep… that would be my Giants. 🙂 I should also mention that THEY ARE 6.5 GAMES IN FRONT OF THE LOSERS FROM LA RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!! Just sayin’.

Simple Woman's Daybook

Looking out my window… dark. It was a beautiful day today with temperatures in the 70’s. I’m loving the climate here in Washington.

I am thinking… about my meeting with the insurance agent tomorrow to get my policy changed to Washington. It won’t be bad but it’s one more thing to cross off my to-do list.

I am thankful… for a good visit with my evil twin, his long-suffering wife, and her family. I’m also really thankful that after a few days of being a pill, Daniel had a pretty good day.

One of my favorite things… a day when my alarm doesn’t have to be set and I can sleep in. That’s not going to be happening for a while though.

I am wearing… jammies. Church clothes were a black fitted tee from Old Navy, a black paisley skirt from Kohl’s, and my black cardigan from Kohl’s. After church, I traded my skirt and cardigan for jeans.

I am creating… emails.

I am watching… COPS: Reloaded. I’m a cop show junkie.

I am hoping… certain emails of mine eventually get answered this week.

I am learning… where all the cool farms are in the area.

In my kitchen… tri-tip, potatoes, and salad tonight with a surprise birthday cake for my sister-in-law for dessert.

In the school room… Daniel is enjoying ESY and good reports are coming home for him each day. It isn’t surprising — he loves school and tends to be a sweet kid there.

Post Script… a friend shared this piece on why #AllLivesMatter is offensive to #BlackLivesMatter supporters. The gist: all lives *SHOULD* matter but, in practice, they don’t.

Shared Quote… “… Reading the Scriptures in church has to be an authentic proclamation of the reader’s faith. Preparation is essential – there are far too many last-minute readings in our churches.” — Olivia de Havilland on reading Scripture as a lector.

Closing Notes: I’m hoping this week to be able to write something on why I don’t weigh in on everything that happens in the media and why there is frequently radio silence from me these days after a week like last week.
