31 Days of My World As It Is Sung: Free Speech Edition of My 7 Quick Takes

7 Quick Takes

Free speech. I just saw on Facebook that Richard Spencer’s speech has ended. The furor over it reminded me of when Milo Yiannopolous attempted to speak at UC Berkeley and they had to cancel it because of the protests. I got pretty sick of having to explain to morons on Facebook that your right to free speech does not mean that your speech is free of consequences.

Milo’s speech also marked the beginning of my policy of unfollowing and unfriending anyone on my wall who used the term “libtard”.

Stories about the good in people. This has been a fortunate find and has restored some of my faith in humanity.

97. My grandma turns 97 years old today. We’ll be having 19 (!!!!) people at the house for dinner on Saturday… which should be interesting. 2 1/2 recipes of goulash, spaetzle, various salads, and half of a sheet cake will be appearing tomorrow and Saturday. My evil twin and his long-suffering wife will arrive tomorrow.

Really? Apparently,45 gives himself and his administration a 10/10 for Puerto Rico disaster recovery efforts. Geez… grade inflation is out of control! [/sarcasm]

So… an A+ effort means a widespread lack of electricity and drinkable water. Huh. Pretty sure Obama would have been crucified for his disaster relief efforts if they had been like 45’s in Puerto Rico.

You mean politicians can work together? Props to the 24 senators co-sponsoring a bill to save the Affordable Care Act. I am especially proud that Patty Murray, my senator, was one of the leaders in putting this together.

Prerequisite baseball take. The Horrible Team from LA is apparently going to be in the World Series. I guess I’ll be rooting for the American League this year, even if it’s the Yankees.

*vomits at the thought of the Dodgers in the World Series*

Some music. Enjoy this new song from Rend Collective.

31 Days of My World As It Is Sung: Source of Traditional Hymnody

31 Days of My World As It Is Sung

When I share a hymn on here that we’ve sung on a Sunday in church, my go-to is YouTube and I usually pick the link based on the source. My favorite source for church music tends to be the BBC show “Songs of Praise” and a link to the most basic query for it is here.

Here’s an example of one of their hymns:

31 Days of My World As It Is Sung: 7 Quick Takes on ADHD, Greek Food, and Other Fun Things

7 Quick Takes

— 1 —

ADHD anniversary. 2 years ago today, Daniel was diagnosed with ADHD and put on medication. As controversial as that decision was, it’s been a good one — he sleeps better at night (and goes to sleep on his own) and he can play independently.

— 2 —

Greek food. I made the comment at choir practice that I would give up Greek food in order to not have to deal with Seattle-Everett traffic. People started throwing out suggestions of closer options and I realized that I could go up to Bellingham. Apparently, there are several up there and there is also an Ethiopian restaurant. Yay!

An Epic issue. The local hospital system just got a new computer system which is kind of a pain in the butt. However, they sent me my code to login and sign myself up so I did that on Monday and got to populate my chart with information. It was geeky fun and I didn’t have to worry about transcription errors or Dragon Dictate problems or anything else that I’ve had to deal with in the past.

Special intention. Please pray for a special intention. Thanks!

Baseball take. So I know in the postseason, these will be the teams I support:
Cubs
Red Sox
Nationals
Diamondbacks

I can’t root for the Astros because they’re a Texas team (I LOVELOVELOVE messing with Texas), the Dodgers are the archenemies of my boys in San Francisco, the Yankees are evil, and I’m pretty sure the Indians made one with Satan again this year to get into the post season because… CLEVELAND SUCKS!!!!

— 6 —

NCAA football. My Huskies are at the top of the PAC-12 and 6th in the nation. Duuuuuude…

On a parting note… Here’s some amazing music and scenery.

31 Days of My World As It Is Sung: Kyrie

31 Days of My World As It Is Sung

When the news first reported the mass shooting in Vegas early this morning (before the death toll climbed above 50), my words on Facebook were “Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison.” (Translation: “Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy.) Now that the death toll is at 58 people, I echo this even more strongly…

The priest of my church in southern California reminded me of this prayer attributed to St. Augustine of Hippo today and I think it is incredibly fitting with everything going on in the world.

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.

31 Days of My World As It Is Sung: The Simple Woman’s Daybook for October 1, 2017

For Today… October 1, 2017

Simple Woman's Daybook

Looking out my window… sunny now though it was raining earlier and we’ve had a few days of good rain. Weather.Com says it’s 50F and I believe them.

I am thinking… about my Doodle assignment this week.

I am thankful… for classes I like this quarter.

One of my favorite things… when my sports teams win. My Giants beat San Diego and I’m hoping my Niners can beat Arizona.

I am wearing… a grey heather long-sleeved shirt and jeans. Church clothes this morning were a blue-grey long-sleeved shirt, black slacks, and black flats.

I am creating… various Doodle polls.

I am listening to… classical music on a DISH Network channel

I am hoping… Daniel’s appointment with the Autism Center at Seattle Children’s Hospital this week goes well. We’ve been waiting for this appointment for a very long time. (The waiting list for an appointment is over a year long.)

I am learning… about email best practices.

In my kitchen… coq au vin is cooking.

In the school room… Daniel continues to love school.

Post Script… Tesla’s aid to victims of Hurricane Maria.

Shared Quote… “The four sayings that lead to wisdom:
I was wrong
I’m sorry
I don’t know
I need help”
— Louise Penny

A moment from my day… Our anthem today.
