Five Favorites: How I Pray

Five Favorites

It’s Tuesday morning at 2:45 a.m. and my brain is refusing to shut off so I’m going to do my Five Favorites now and see if I can purge some of what is on my mind.

One

Compline. Compline is referred to as “Night Prayer” by some of my Catholic friends. I use the version in the Book of Common Prayer. The liturgy and readings center me and the prayers give me words when I am severely lacking them at the end of the day.

Two

Devotional reading. I’ve been using Our Daily Bread on and off for about 20 years. The boy sitting next to me in my sociology class during my first semester of high school was reading it and I told him it looked interesting. He told me to keep it and thus started my relationship with RBC Ministries. While it existed, I also read Campus Journal (which is now defunct) which was a devotional geared toward students. It gives me a passage of Scripture to read, a meditation on it, and a short prayer. I find that even if I don’t really get to pray when I’m reading it (usually because I have a loud 5 year old), things from it pop into my mind during the day and I pray extemporaneously about those things.

Three

Music. A large way God speaks to me is through music. I have Air 1 and KLOVE on in the car frequently and sometimes something in a song will hook me and give me something to think about/pray about. I also love to sing and choral music is great for this, especially early, Renaissance, and Baroque sacred music which can move me to tears.

Four

Quiet church. During Lent, Beth Anne assigned me the Lenten penance of finding a church to pray in once or twice a week. Being able to sit in quiet and focus on the Cross is incredibly helpful to me, especially when my brain is spinning and I need it to silence itself.

Five

Scripture. God’s Word speaks to me in interesting ways and it’s where I look when I don’t have the words to pray. The Gospels remind me of who Jesus is and the Psalms remind me that God is chill with me having emotions.

Go love up Hallie and the others.

7 Quick Takes: Only 5 Takes This Week

7 Quick Takes

— 1 —

My crisis of the week. I’m having to get rid of 3 of my 4 cats (I can’t go into the reasons on this blog at this point) and I’m in agony over this. I’ve had the boys and Freya since they were 8 weeks old and it’s killing me to have to give them up. (We’re keeping Edda, partially because her beautiful black fur makes her hard to re-home.) In the case of the boys, they really do deserve a quieter home than we have at the moment where there isn’t a screaming child and moves every 2-4 years. Still, I’m pretty sad.

— 2 —

Awesomely bad worship. One of my Confirmation kids from Minnesota posted this link which has 6 horrific worship song videos. Here are a few other ones that are beyond awful and make me thankful to be part of a church that worships with traditional hymns.

— 3 —

Baseball. My boys (the Giants) just beat my other NL boys (the Cardinals) 6-5. I’m glad Sergio Romo got the save though I would have been just as happy if Jason Motte (closer for the Cards) had gotten it.

— 4 —

Auction for Brett. Do you see the precious child on my sidebar? Someone loves him enough to auction off some Frozen dolls to raise money for his adoption grant. Click on over to check it out!

Stopping here. It’s been that kind of week.

Five Favorites: Miscellanea (XX)

Five Favorites

One

For the cellists among us… I think the best line from this is “Can all the white male dancers return to their piano benches please? … That was like Vanilla Ice meets Richard Simmons.” I heart The Piano Guys.

(I can’t get the video to embed so you’ll unfortunately have to click on the link.)

Two

Clarity. I’m praying for this right now regarding some decision-making so I’m definitely wanting it badly.

Three

Tabbies. There’s a big orange one who is wanting to climb on my lap and be a mama’s cat as I type this. He’s a love… when he’s not being a gigantic sissy.

Four

More from The Piano Guys. This particular arrangement of music from “The Mission” paired with “How Great Thou Art” is tear-inducing in its beauty.

Five

Amanda. This girl is AWESOME. She is one of my prayer warriors, has an amazing sense of humor, and knows her Catholic doctrine like nobody else. I am blessed to call her a friend and wish her and her beloved Anthony nothing but joy this weekend as they celebrate their nuptials.

Go love up Hallie and the others.

Five Favorites: Miscellanea (XVIII)

Five Favorites

I haven’t done a “Miscellanea” one in ages!

One

Leverage. My mom has addicted me to Leverage. I am seriously in love to the point that I’m up late watching episodes on Netflix. My favorite character has to be Parker though I’m a fan of Eliot as well.

Two

Benedictines of Mary. I am quite addicted to the recordings done by the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles. They are my go-to when I’m trying to get to sleep, when I’m working, or when I need some help quieting myself.

Three

Iced chai tea lattés. Yes, I’m aware that the ones at $tarbux are chai-flavored milk. This seems to be my go-to drink when I get anything from $tarbux these days as I’m not enamored with their iced vanilla lattés.

Four

Vanilla non-fat Greek yogurt from Trader Joe’s. It isn’t overly sweet like the stuff from Yoplait. It’s also half of the carb load of the Yoplait stuff which would explain it.

Five

Quiet. It’s why I stay up past a normal bedtime — I get quiet in the living room and a time to journal, blog, and/or pray. I don’t know that it’s the Evangelical “quiet time” necessarily but it’s a time for me to wind down and get centered.

Go love up Hallie and the others.

The Simple Woman’s Daybook: April 22, 2014

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY April 22, 2014

Outside my window… dark. I’m blogging after midnight as usual. It was actually pretty nice yesterday.

I am thinking… about how I’ll make it through tomorrow. Daniel doesn’t go back to school until Wednesday and I think he’s getting cabin fever

I am thankful… that Holy Week is over and for a lovely Easter afternoon and evening with my parents on Sunday.

In the kitchen… dishes. Always dishes.

I am wearing… blue t-shirt from Old Navy and black sweats from Target.

I am praying for… discernment, a special intention, for Daniel to get the hang of potty-training, and for my family to come to know Christ. (I’m a convert.)

I am going… to probably take Daniel with me to get some chai tomorrow morning as an excuse to get out of the house.

I am wondering… if we’re going to be getting rain up here. My dad was saying that they were supposed to get some in San Jose today.

I am reading… Jesus: A Pilgrimage by James Martin, S.J. — finally getting back to it after a brief break to get through the murder mysteries that arrived from the library for me over a very short period of time.

I am hoping… Daniel catches on to potty-training soon. I want this behind me.

I am looking forward to… Picnic on the Green at Daniel’s preschool on Friday. Parents bring lunch for their kids and we have a picnic on the lawn with them.

I am hearing YouTube hymns from my blog — listening to music I’ve linked in the past.

Around the house… dishes to do (my kingdom for a dishwasher!), laundry to fold, and a kitchen to clean.

I am pondering… life after June 15th.

A favorite quote for today… “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.” – C.S. Lewis

I actually brought this quote up in Bible study last week!

One of my favorite things… a quiet house.

A few plans for the rest of the week: ABA therapy for Daniel every afternoon this week, returning my flats to Payless on Wednesday or Thursday, counseling on Friday morning, Picnic on the Green afterwards, and taking stuff to be shredded on Saturday.

A peek into my day… Madeline Kahn and Grover singing the “Echo Song”. I sing it to Daniel frequently.

7 Quick Takes: Favorite Triduum Hymns

7 Quick Takes

Jen isn’t doing Quick Takes this week because of it being the Triduum but I thought I’d do some of my favorite hymns from this 3-day period. I’m unfortunately not making it to church because of Daniel so doing this list is a chance to scratch my itch for traditional hymns.

— 1 —

Soul, Adorn Yourself with Gladness This is a version of the hymn “Deck Thyself My Soul With Gladness” that I love. It’s one of my favorite hymn tunes and one that I only get to sing once or twice a year because it’s a Communion hymn and one that our organist doesn’t like to play. As this is Maundy Thursday/Holy Thursday, it fits.

— 2 —

Sing My Tongue the Glorious Battle. This is a version of this hymn *NOT* set to Marty Haugen’s music. It tells the story of Christ coming to die for us. It reminds me of sagas that I’ve heard sung.

— 3 —

Ubi Caritas My first introduction to Taizé music was at Maundy Thursday 17 years ago. This is one of the songs we sang. The translation is “where there is charity and love, God himself is there.”

— 4 —

O Sacred Head Now Wounded This is a Good Friday standard. It’s a tune by Hans Hassler which was adapted into a chorale by J.S. Bach in the 18th century. The words are by Bernard of Clairvaux and date from the 12th century. This particular one is sung by Fernando Ortega who does everything beautifully.

— 5 —

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross One of my favorite Cross-centric hymns that is fitting for this occasion.

— 6 —

Were You There When They Crucified My Lord? I had a really hard time finding a version of this on YouTube that wasn’t overly dramatized. The most powerful versions of this are the most simple.

— 7 —

Ah Holy Jesus This one has the ability to make me cry because it forces me to admit that *I* am the reason Jesus was crucified and that it was *MY* sin for which he was atoning. It doesn’t hurt that it’s a 17th century hymn as well.

Lenten Music Monday: All My Hope on God Is Founded

Next week will be the last Lenten Music Monday until next year. I thankfully had a choice for hymns this week based on the readings and I went with “All My Hope on God Is Founded”. The writer of the words, Joachim Neander, is one of my favorite hymn writers (and yes, I’m geeky enough to have a few) and the music is by one of my favorite British composers.

Here are the words:

All my hope on God is founded;
he doth still my trust renew,
me through change and chance he guideth,
only good and only true.
God unknown,
he alone
calls my heart to be his own.

Pride of man and earthly glory,
sword and crown betray his trust;
what with care and toil he buildeth,
tower and temple fall to dust.
But God’s power,
hour by hour,
is my temple and my tower.

God’s great goodness aye endureth,
deep his wisdom, passing thought:
splendor, light and life attend him,
beauty springeth out of naught.
Evermore
from his store
newborn worlds rise and adore.

Daily doth the almighty Giver
bounteous gifts on us bestow;
his desire our soul delighteth,
pleasure leads us where we go.
Love doth stand
at his hand;
joy doth wait on his command.

Still from man to God eternal
sacrifice of praise be done,
high above all praises praising
for the gift of Christ, his Son.
Christ doth call
one and all:
ye who follow shall not fall.

Here is the choir of King’s College Cambridge singing it:
