Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY June 11, 2012

Outside my window… hot hot hot. 95F today according to Weather.Com.

I am thinking… that I need to cut off my hair again. It’s been almost 3 months.

I am thankful… for the mini nap I got today while Daniel was taking his nap.

In the kitchen… oatmeal.

I am wearing… old black Arabic shirt and black running shorts.

I am creating… things for Brett’s Blogathon 2012.

I am going… to probably be spending a fair amount of time inside this week because of the heat.

I am wondering… if I should do a theme for Quick Takes this week.

I am reading… Sugarplum Dead by Carolyn Hart.

I am hoping… to get Daniel potty-trained this summer.

I am looking forward to… this weekend. That’s all I can say right now.

Around the house… I have house help at the moment which is seriously blessing me.

A favorite quote for today… “There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, ‘All right, then, have it your way.'” — C.S. Lewis

One of my favorite things… Daniel waking up happy from his nap.

A few plans for the rest of the week: errands and hopefully some water play with Daniel.

A peek into my day… Snow drifts in Montana — I needed a reminder of cold stuff because it’s so bloody hot here.

7 Quick Takes: British Choral Competitions, Autistic Gripings, and Honest Toddlers

7 Quick Takes

— 1 —

Holy British choral music, Batman! A YouTube video off of Unapologetically Episcopalian fed into the UK School Choir of the Year competition videos.

This is from Ysgol Y Strade and the way they performed made me weep from the sheer beauty and the harmonies. The solo is in English but they do the rest in Welsh and perform it more beautifully than I’ve ever heard it sung in English.

Their inspirational song was “Clap Yo Hands” by Gershwin which they also did in Welsh. Gershwin is difficult in English so I have a huge appreciation for them translating it. I also love that a staid school choir instantaneously morphed into an African-American church choir.

The other two schools that made it to the finals are also breathtaking but Ysgol Y Strade just captivated me to the point of tears. Here are the others for comparison:

Their inspriational piece didn’t go over well so I’m not embedding it.

This is the choir that won:

This is the song that clinched it.

My monsters have vet appointments this week. I took Cullen/Edda (who is trying to sleep on my hands as I type this) on Wednesday and Finian/Freya will go tomorrow. Both Cullen and Edda got relatively clean bills of health though Cullen needs a teeth cleaning. We’re hoping he can wait until August/September when they have a special where they’ll do it for 10% off. (Cullen’s name, BTW, has absolutely nothing to do with Twilight. I had him long before I had ever heard of the Stephenie Meyer books.)

— 3 —

Just a tip: if a parent has an autistic kid, they’ve probably read all the studies and know that a gluten-free diet sometimes works. Seriously, it’s getting hard not to slap people who ask me if I’ve heard about a gluten-free diet when I tell them that Daniel is autistic. I was talking to a parishioner last night who has an autistic grandson and she expressed the same frustration. Autism is one of those disorders which affects everyone differently. For some people, the GAPS diet is a miracle. For others, it does nothing. I’m also about to mangle the next person who (not knowing Daniel is autistic) tells me that they’re not vaccinating because they don’t want their kid to develop autism. The 1998 study positing that was disproven and the doctor was stricken from the British Medical Register (a.k.a. lost his license to practice medicine).

Daniel loves being “watered”. Jon was watering today while Daniel was playing in his wading pool (which has a sprinkler function attached) and he accidentally splashed Daniel with the water from the watering head on the sprinkler only to have Daniel squeal and giggle. He had to go grab some stuff at the church and asked if I could “water the bear” while he was gone. Too funny! We knew he was aquatic but maybe this will help him grow?

The Proposition 29 vote is still too close to definitively call right now. About 55,000 votes separate “yes” and “no” with all the absentee ballots from people like me left to count. They shared a statistic on the news last that about 50% of Sacramento County voters requested absentee ballots and about 18,000 people in San Joaquin County requested them. If this is the trend across the state, it will be July before we actually know anything. California residents, you can go to the Secretary of State website if you want to see how a candidate or ballot measure did.

I’m still plugging along on planning Brett’s Blogathon. Head over to his site to see my progress and donate a few bucks to his adoption fund while you’re at it.

I have found a website that describes my life. Kendra @ The Nerdy Wife introduced me to Honest Toddler on Twitter and I found their blog. One entry describes the mom “drinking room temperature white wine out of a ceramic mug” and while I’m not that bad (mostly because I can’t drink), this is how I look after a day like the one described in by that entry:

Me in the morning... or maybe at 6 pm.

FOR TODAY June 4, 2012

Outside my window… dark. We had rain today. It was positively glorious even if I was walking to and from preschool in my pretty clothes to pick Daniel up in the midst of it.

I am thinking… that the rain and cold temps should have stayed longer. I enjoyed my afternoon in fleece pj bottoms and Daniel was extra cute in his lion jammies.

I am thankful… that the funeral at church went well and that the family catered the main food portions — we had at least 200 attending with probably 100+ of those coming back for lunch. The church ladies also came through excellently with dessert.

In the kitchen… funeral food! I baked butterscotch bars yesterday too.

I am wearing… blue old navy shirt and black running shorts.

I am creating… various things associated with Brett’s Blogathon.

I am going… to have to get swim diapers and a swimsuit for Daniel at some point tomorrow. Target ho!

I am wondering… if I will ever catch up on sleep.

I am reading… just finished A Trick of the Light by Louise Penny and Honeymoon with Murder by Carolyn G. Hart. I am going to start on the next oldest one I have as well as ask for the older ones from the library.

I am hoping… I get through all my plans tomorrow.

I am looking forward to… Ladies’ Night Out on Wednesday.

Around the house… a Cheerios tornado to be vacuumed up.

I am pondering… too many things to list.

One of my favorite things… chocolate frosting. I managed to snag some really good cake with a thick layer of frosting.

A few plans for the rest of the week: end-of-year program for Daniel tomorrow morning, last day of school and Ladies’ Night Out on Wednesday, probably story time at the library on Thursday, and a massage on Friday.

FOR TODAY May 28, 2012

Outside my window… sunny and warm — 80’s probably.

I am thinking… that I should have turned the A/C on sooner.

I am thankful… Daniel finally went down for a nap through I’m hoping it wasn’t because he pitched off the coffee table and onto his head. (I’ve been monitoring his pupils and they were normal before he went down.)

In the kitchen… dishes to be done.

I am wearing… black t-shirt and black running shorts.

I am creating… this entry and planning stuff for Brett’s Blogathon.

I am going… to check on Daniel. (Just checked on him — he’s breathing fine.)

I am wondering… how much wood a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood. (I usually just delete this question.)

I am reading… A Trick of the Light by Louise Penny. I finally finished Style, Sex, and Substance this weekend as I had a few long drives where I wasn’t the one driving and could tuck in with my NOOK.

I am hoping… I can force myself to do some reading so my library books don’t sit for three weeks.

I am looking forward to… watching either “Hawaii Five-O” or “Hart of Dixie” tonight. (It’s the pilot of “Hart of Dixie” which I’ve seen a number of times so I might watch “Five-O” instead.

Around the house… dishes to do and Cheerios to vacuum up.

A favorite quote for today… “Thirty was so strange for me. I’ve really had to come to terms with the fact that I am now a walking and talking adult.” — C.S. Lewis (I just turned 32.)

One of my favorite things… Daniel sitting on the coffee table next to me eating Cheerios and trying to feed them to me.

A few plans for the rest of the week: OT meeting for Daniel and… I think that’s it. It’s strange not to have a laundry list of plans.

A peek into my day… Cullen helping with the laundry. Now if I could get him to do the dishes.

Outside my window… dark. I think it was hot today — I didn’t go outside until 5:45 pm. Just saw on the news that it was in the 80’s today. This is an improvement over the 90’s this weekend. I hate heat.

I am thinking… that this migraine/neck pain has worn out its welcome.

I am thankful… for my family coming up to celebrate the communal birthday this weekend. (I’m a twin and my brother lives 45 minutes away.) We went to the town festival and the Relay for Life event at the high school. Dinner was a Mediterranean orzo dish and salad. Dessert was brownies that my mom made.

In the kitchen… I made the orzo on Saturday as well as some boxty for church.

I am wearing… navy blue maternity shirt and blue plaid boxers.

I am creating… this entry and a topic list/posting schedule for Brett’s Blogathon.

I am going… to hopefully feel better and less achy tomorrow. Fibro, you suck!

I am reading… not enough these days.

I am hoping… the pain in my neck and shoulders goes down with some ice.

I am looking forward to… a weekend without things to do. There’s also my

Around the house… it’s clean after having company this weekend.

I am pondering… various ways to publicize Brett’s Blogathon.

A favorite quote for today… Another song this week — “Jesus, Friend of Sinners” by Casting Crowns. I heard it on KLOVE this evening and immediately decided to get it off of iTunes.

One of my favorite things… my beautiful house panther who decided to settle on my chest while I am working on this. 🙂 Mommy loves her Edda cat.

A few plans for the rest of the week: whatever errands come up and a massage on Friday.

A peek into my day… The view of the eclipse from my porch.

Long Long Ago…

in a galaxy far far away… (OK, it was Los Gatos. But anyway…)

My brother (left) and I (right) in our grandparents' laps.

I’m the sleeping one on the right. We’re 3 weeks old — I know because it was taken at home and I was in the hospital for the first three weeks. (Preemie + twin = NICU for a week and then local hospital to put some weight on. My brother went home after only 3 days.)

I celebrated today by sleeping in until 10:30 (in the living room with Daniel climbing on me — I didn’t even register it) and then going to the local town festival with my parents (who came up from San Jose). We also stopped by the local Relay for Life to see church members who were there. The evil twin (Sean) and my sister-in-law came over at 5:30 (she had schoolwork to do) and we had dinner (a Mediterranean orzo dish) and brownies (not special ones — this is northern California but my mom doing the baking) for dessert. It was good to see Jeanette (the sister-in-law) because we’ve missed her this quarter when we’ve had gatherings at our place. I’m hoping she has a lighter load this summer (if she goes) and this fall.

Meanwhile, the bear child is asleep and I’m hoping Jon goes that direction. Allergies in the Sacramento area have been insufferably awful and Daniel had the combination of no nap/stimulation/sun/allergies today. He was a cute boy but definitely needed his 8:00 bedtime.

Right now, I’m making boxty for church tomorrow. We have our end-of-the-year Sunday school potluck and one of our Confirmation kids suggested an international theme. Being the good Irish Lutheran I am, I decided on boxty because colcannon makes me sick. (There’s some bad juju between the two of us from when I was pregnant with Daniel.)

FOR TODAY May 14, 2012

Outside my window… sunny and hot though there’s a breeze.

I am thinking… that my neck pain has worn out its welcome.

I am thankful… for lots of rest today.

In the kitchen… banana bread at some point this week to take pictures for the blogathon I’m planning on Brett’s behalf.

I am wearing… black t-shirt and green plaid boxers.

I am creating… this entry and a list of topics for Brett’s blogathon.

I am going… to curl up in the recliner and ice my neck once I’m done with this.

I am wondering… why Daniel is so grumpy right now.

I am reading… still on Style, Sex, and Substance ed. by Hallie Lord. The problem is that I kept forgetting to charge my NOOK which is the format in which I have the book.I did read a quickie murder mystery this weekend though — Southern Ghost by Carolyn Hart which was pretty good.

I am hoping… my neck stops misbehaving soon. It’s been almost 2 weeks of pain.

I am looking forward to… my birthday on Saturday.

Around the house… Jon did all the dishes as a Mother’s Day present to me.

A favorite quote for today… how about a song? I’m fond of the alternate title of this one — “Like A Lion”!

One of my favorite things… Daniel snuggling with me yesterday and playing clapping games.

A few plans for the rest of the week: WIC either tomorrow or Wednesday, Strawberry Festival and my birthday on Saturday.
