Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY

Outside my window… sunny and probably in the 50’s or 60’s. Apparently, this equals rain in the eyes of Sacramento weather people. Umm… yeah.

I am thinking… that my little bear should hopefully be going to sleep soon given that I gave him some Benadryl and have changed his diaper a few times.

I am thankful… that the Girl Scouts are going strong 100 years after their founding. I’m also thankful for the cookie program, especially for Samoas which are making me happy (and we’re not going to talk about their effect on my waistline).

In the kitchen… probably heating some Bertolli’s soup or something.

I am wearing… my black Arabic shirt and Jon’s navy “Left Behind” shorts.

I am creating… this entry and pondering ideas for Lenten ones so I can stay with my Lenten discipline.

I am going… to Bible study tonight while Jon stays with Daniel.

I am wondering… how people can claim President Obama is a Muslim when there was the grumping about Pastor Jeremiah Wright in the 2008 election — you know Obama’s PASTOR?!?!?!?!? (“Obama is Muslim” was trending on Twitter today.)

I am reading… Fearless by Max Lucado.

I am hoping… Daniel takes a good nap and goes down easily tonight.

I am looking forward to… various things this week.

I am pondering… things for Lenten writings this week.

A favorite quote for today… “If we discover a desire within us that nothing in this world can satisfy, also we should begin to wonder if perhaps we were created for another world.” — C.S. Lewis

One of my favorite things… Samoas!

A few plans for the rest of the week: Bible study and “Hart of Dixie” tonight, PT tomorrow, speech and mid-week Lenten stuff on Wednesday, OT on Thursday, possibly Confession and dinner with Dean and Kym on Friday, and family gathering for my dad’s birthday on Saturday at my evil twin’s house.

7 Quick Takes — Occupying Lent, Veggie Burgers, and #ashtag Loveliness

7 Quick Takes

Wow! My first couple days of Lent have been sooooo amazing! I’m just gaining so many insights into my faith and… yeah, I’ll just shut up now and move on to my Quick Takes.

— 1 —

Please help my friend Paula win an award from Circle of Moms. Her daughter Anna has Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD) and has been waiting two years for a liver transplant. Their transplant blog was nominated to be in the Top 25 Moms with Inspiring Families. If you’re a mom, please go vote. At last glance, she was #26 or #27.

— 2 —

I have a mirror site for my Lenten writings on WordPress.Com. Want to read my Lenten writings (which are crappy thus far) but do not want to have to look at my eeevvvvvvvvviiiiiilllllll Obama button? Go here. You’re welcome.

Need some ideas for food on meat-free days? Priest’s Wife has a great entry on meatless means for manly men. My recommendations are Gardenburgers and various Morningstar Farms products (both in your freezer section). I can personally vouch for both brands’ iterations of Portabella/Mushroom Lovers burgers and spicy black bean burgers. I’m also a fan of Morningstar Farms Tomato & Basil Pizza Burgers and their veggie corn dogs. (Truthfully, I prefer them to regular corn dogs.) I can’t speak highly of Morningstar Farms breakfast products because the texture is just wrong to me and I’m also mildly allergic to eggs (i.e. no breakfast sandwiches) for me. My vegetarian husband, however, loves their veggie bacon and veggie sausage patties and links.

I know that the vast majority of you are Catholic but I have a source for interesting and worshipful music. Ron Pogue at Unapologetically Episcopalian posts Morning and Evening Prayer every day and includes a Youtube video of sacred music each time. Some of it is Anglican chant (which is incredibly beautiful) and some of it is classical music. He’s also on Facebook which means that you can get it in your news feed… if you haven’t given up Facebook for Lent. 😉 If I didn’t already have a devotional that I use, I’d totally do Morning Prayer using his site and my Book of Common Prayer.

— 5 —

Along the lines of interesting and worshipful music for prayer, I can’t recommend Pray As You Go enough. I used to use this (in addition to Our Daily Bread) during my hour-long commute to work in Montana. It was mostly silent prayer but there was always some kind of music at the beginning and it spanned the spectrum from Taizé to chant to Ladysmith Black Mambazo. I also used the silent time after I hit mile marker 379 on I-15 to pray for people.

My thanks to Kate for coming up with the idea of posting pics of our #ashtag loveliness on Twitter. (Thanks to Beth Anne for compiling them.) My tweets are protected so here are my pics of me rocking my #ashtag.

For want of a simple salt, a woman and her baby died today. What? You didn’t hear about that on the evening news? Oh wait… that’s because it happened in the Third World! Quoting the Preeclampsia Foundation website:

Globally, preeclampsia and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a leading cause of maternal and infant illness and death. By conservative estimates, these disorders are responsible for 76,000 maternal and 500,000 infant deaths each year.

One of the treatments for preeclampsia (to keep it from jumping to full-on eclampsia) is magnesium sulfate (MgSO4), a simple salt that we refer to in the USA as “Epsom salt”. The shortage of a solution of that salt (the concentration needs to be specific) and the lack of a medical professional trained in its usage means the mother and baby die. Want to help combat that problem? Sponsor me in the Promise Walk for Preeclampsia.

FOR TODAY February 20, 2012

Outside my window… gray and yucky when I got up. Much nicer now though probably still cold.

I am thinking… that it was a good idea to give Daniel some Benadryl after his second (?) vomit episode this morning. He’s on juice and Cheerios at the moment and we’ll add stuff in as he does better.

I am thankful… for the goulash and spaetzle I brought home with me from my parents’ house. It was two meals worth that I didn’t have to cook.

In the kitchen… the leftover goulash and spaetzle. Also coming up with meatless ideas for this week.

I am wearing… blue maternity shirt and penguin pajama bottoms.

I am creating… ideas for posts for my Occupying Lent category.

I am going… to check on Daniel when I’m done with this.

I am wondering… why my Obama button looks so skewed on Firefox even though I re-sized it and re-uploaded the smaller version.

I am reading… Still: Notes on a Mid-Faith Crisis by Lauren Winner. I also snuck in The Chocolate Castle Clue by JoAnna Carl this weekend.

I am hoping… I don’t have a dentist visit this week given my jaw pain.

I am looking forward to… my massage on Friday and my brother and sister-in-law coming on Saturday.

Around the house… clean living room floor. Yay!

I am pondering… what to write about on Wednesday when I start my Occupying Lent series.

A favorite quote for today… “The real problem is not why some pious, humble, believing people suffer, but why some do not.” — C.S. Lewis

One of my favorite things… teryaki chicken at my favorite sushi/noodle bar.

A few plans for the rest of the week: PT tomorrow, speech and Ash Wednesday on Wednesday, OT on Thursday, massage and cleaning on Friday, and time with family on Saturday.

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY January 30, 2012

Outside my window… dusk. It was in the 50’s or 60’s today, I think. It was shirt-sleeve weather at least.

I am thinking… about ABA stuff for this Friday.

I am thankful… for the weekend with my mom in San Jose and that Daniel responded so well to her working with him.

In the kitchen… Crystal Light Peach Tea. (Haven’t figured out dinner yet.)

I am wearing… charcoal grey shirt from Lady Foot Locker and navy sweats.

I am creating… this entry.

I am going… nowhere until Wednesday if I have any say in the matter.

I am wondering… if the stuff my doctor gave me this morning will stop the lingering cough from the Mutant Death Cold that I had at Thanksgiving (and that landed Daniel in the hospital). His theory is that my blood pressure medication (Lisinopril) is likely causing it but put me on an antibiotic (Doxycycline) because I’m asthmatic and he’s afraid of bronchitis sprouting in me.

I am reading… Inheritance by Christopher Paolini. I’m probably within 30 pages of the end but I don’t get much quiet reading time and didn’t finish it at lunch today.

I am hoping… I sleep tonight. I haven’t really gotten any sleep for a week and it made the power outage this morning throw me for a loop. (A transformer blew a few blocks away and 1300 people lost power. The weird thing is that those across the street didn’t and I don’t think my next door neighbors did.)

I am looking forward to… Ladies’ Night Out on Wednesday as well as “Hart of Dixie” on TV tonight.

Around the house… Jon cleaned while I was gone this weekend. I’m thankful for this.

I am pondering… waaaaay too many things right now.

One of my favorite things… pesto bagels with garlic shmear from the bagel shop near my parents’ house. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it over there on Sunday before they closed. Rats!

A few plans for the rest of the week: PT tomorrow, speech and Ladies’ Night Out on Wednesday, OT on Thursday, and the ABA home visit along with my massage on Friday. Jon also has a couple funerals this week.

A peek into my day… This is Trail Kitty, my parents’ sissy Maine Coon cat. He’s a handsome boy but is afraid of his own (raccoon) tail. I got some petting time with him this weekend before he took off for his loft in the garage.

7 Quick Takes — Raindances

7 Quick Takes

After having one of the driest Decembers on record, we’re receiving a few weather systems that should make a dent in our needed rainfall and hopefully add some snow to the Sierras. (Yes, I’m fully aware that “Sierras” is like writing “mountainses”. However, everyone around here pluralizes it.)

If you view my blog as a whole, there’s a sticky post at the top which explains the button on the sidebar. Restating it briefly, I can’t throw my weight behind any of the GOP candidates, so I’m supporting Obama. The political discussion on this blog regarding the 2012 election stops at that point (Twitter is another story) and I’m perfectly OK with anyone who wants to pass over my blog until November 7th. I’m not going to gripe about any of the GOP debates or any candidate — the only complaining I may do is about the number of political ads on TV come autumn.

— 2 —

I think everybody in the pro-life movement needs to read this. Kate is another Quick Takes blogger and she is so perfectly on-the-money with what she has to say. I have friends on both sides of the issue and she brings a lot of grace to the pro-life side of it. (Thank you to Katie @ NFP and Me for re-tweeting it.)

— 3 —

I have parent training this weekend for the autism program that will be working with Daniel. I’d prefer doing it over two Saturdays instead of Saturday/Sunday but the only way we can have this in place before Daniel turns three is for me to do it this weekend. I’ve almost got the care schedule for Sunday morning in place and I’m thankful that the people of Metanoia are so awesome to offer to take care of him while Jon is conducting worship and teaching Sunday school. (For those not in the know, I’m married to a Lutheran pastor.) We get an hour-long break for lunch so I’ll definitely be charging my NOOK so I can curl up with it during lunch. (It also has a pad of paper in the cover so I can take copious notes.)

— 4 —

I just found out that a seminary friend of mine is pregnant again… with triplets. I managed not to remark that she was going to have her hands full — I imagine that there will be plenty of people telling her that in her congregation. I’m hoping for a healthy pregnancy for her — pregnancies of multiples can be tricky by nature. (The hospital where I used to live in Montana refused to deliver twins or higher because there was so much that could go wrong.)

— 5 —

I had lobster for the first time last weekend at the lobster feed put on by the Chamber of Commerce. Honestly, it’s not my first choice for shellfish — it was a little bit too rich. The shrimp from the Low Country Boil on the other hand… I wish I’d taken some of it home with me although at the time, the thought of more food was more than I could handle. It was a fun evening and I’m thankful to one of my parishioners for inviting me to go with her.

— 6 —

I have to admit that I’m somewhat amused at the revelation that Paula Deen has Type II diabetes. There are a number of people crying “HYPOCRITE!!!” at her because she pushed her high-fat comfort food while living with the condition and I don’t doubt she is a bit guilty of hypocrisy; but people also had a choice to follow her recipes and eat that food. She claims to have always preached moderation and that’s something that we Americans have problems in practicing. The normal dinner plate size has increased insanely in the last 30-40 years and having appetizers, an entrée, and dessert at most major restaurant chains will use up your daily allowance of calories in just that meal in addition to all the excess fat and sodium.

— 7 —

I’m getting kind of addicted to the Friday lunch special at the local sushi place. Soup, salad, teryaki chicken or beef, rice, and a roll of choice for under $15. It works. They’re also more than happy to let me just sit and read after I eat.

The Simple Woman’s Daybook: January 2, 2012

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY January 2, 2012

Outside my window… foggy this morning and sunny in the afternoon. It was supposed to be near 60 today but I don’t think I noticed while I was outside.

I am thinking… about what to suggest to use next for Bible Studies.

I am thankful… for Jon being home today. It’s why I’m able to do this now instead of after 9:00 tonight when Daniel is in bed.

In the kitchen… veggie chips and pub cheese from Trader Joe’s.

I am wearing… grey shirt and my penguin pajama bottoms.

I am going… to hopefully have a quiet night tonight with Daniel not in a bearish mood.

I am wondering… where the people on CA-99 learned to drive.

I am reading… just finished In Stitches by Anthony Youn M.D. He had an article on CNN a few weeks ago and it mentioned that he had written this book. It’s pretty light in terms of tone though he does talk about his lack of sex in college and medical school. Despite that, I enjoyed it.

I am hoping… Daniel either goes down for his nap now or goes to sleep early tonight.

I am looking forward to… having nothing on Wednesday because Tuesday is going to be packed.

I am hearing… Daniel pushing his shopping cart around and Catholic Weekend on iTunes.

Around the house… dishes and stuff to do.

I am pondering… things in my heart.

One of my favorite things… veggie chips and pub cheese.

A few plans for the rest of the week… doctor’s appointment and PT for Daniel tomorrow, nothing on Wednesday, and OT on Thursday.

The Simple Woman’s Daybook: December 19, 2011

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY December 19, 2011

Outside my window… dark. It was completely foggy until noon and then sunny with a chill.

I am thankful… for my mom baby-sitting Daniel so I could take in a concert with my dad on Saturday night.

In the kitchen… a lovely Hot Pocket for dinner. It’s not the best for me but it’s fast and easy.

I am wearing… my black Arabic shirt and my blue penguin pajama bottoms.

I am creating… this entry. 🙂 I’m done with Christmas cards.

I am going… to relax tonight instead of having to stamp and seal cards.

I am wondering… what else I forgot at the store today.

I am reading… Three Day Town by Margaret Maron. I put The Magicians down for the moment because this one is due back at the library eventually.

I am hoping… Daniel’s playground date tomorrow goes well.

I am looking forward to… the Christmas season being over and being able to go to the post office or to the store without it being mobbed.

I am hearing… our Winnie the Pooh DVD (which kept Daniel’s attention so I could finish the Christmas cards).

Around the house… Jon cleaned. I’m happy.

One of my favorite things… Coca Cola. So bad for me but I crave it during stressful times.

A few plans for the rest of the week… therapies, errands, and… yeah.

Here is picture for thought I am sharing… My dad decorating for Christmas. The explanation: my dad is a mechanical engineer and he has a fascination with farm equipment, especially John Deere. When I lived in Minnesota, our parsonage was down the street from the John Deere store so I would walk down there and get him various miniature versions of machinery and John Deere gear (a hat). I even tied a John Deere blankie for him in 2009. He keeps the machinery in the guest bathroom and occasionally changes things up, replacing stuff in the trailer and hopper with M&M’s, rose petals, and now Christmas balls. After I took this picture, he added plough furrows using colored sprinkles.
