7 Quick Takes: Church Secretaries, Books, and Going Gluten-Free

7 Quick Takes

— 1 —

Church office fun. I’m subbing for the church secretary this week and having fun doing it. Wednesday involved getting to be present for Bible study before immersing myself in Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Word. Today was more Microsoft Publisher fun, Microsoft Word, and whatever my priest needed to be done. Tomorrow, I get to do bulletins. I am so excited!

The County Fair. Daniel’s class is heading to the LA County Fair next Friday. We had a note come home asking if we wanted to volunteer to go too. My answer: “no.”. (It will be hot and I hate heat. Yes, I live in a desert; but I didn’t get a say in that.) Jon’s answer: “yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” You gotta love a non-traditional family where the dad is the field trip chaperone. 🙂 I think they’ll have a fabulous time.

— 3 —

Holy Mirth. Fr. James Martin, S.J. posted something for Joke with the Pope which has people donating their favorite jokes in the name of charity. I’m thinking of all my favorite religious ones (that aren’t in Fr. Jim’s book, Between Heaven and Mirth) and the cause for which it will go.

— 4 —

Take me out to the ballgame. Jon and I are headed to a Dodgers game tomorrow for Episcopal Dodgers night. It will be the first professional sporting event that I have ever attended so I’m excited. I wish it was the Giants or Mariners or the Cards (or pretty much any other team besides the Dodgers or the Yankees) instead; but hey, at least I will be able to say that I’ve been to an MLB game. I’ll probably root for the Pirates since it is against my sports allegiances to root for the Dodgers. (For those not in the know, the Dodgers are the mortal enemies of my Giants.)

On my to-do list today: acquire some Giants socks so I can represent my boys at the game. (According to Jon and my priest, I am not allowed to wear any Giants shirts.)

A book launch party for introverts. The latest book from The Bloggess is coming out next week and she’s having a book launch party via Google Plus. The launch party and the book are very likely both going to be NSFW but any fan of The Bloggess already knows that. 🙂

— 6 —

G.K Chesterton. Someone donated a book of Father Brown mysteries to my mother-in-law’s Little Free Library and she set it aside for me. I’ve only read a handful so far but they’ve kept my attention. This might be a book that I can pick up and put down every so often while I wait for my favorite authors to come out with their latest works.

Mmmmm… gluten-free. My bloodwork did not come back positive for celiac disease so it’s fairly likely that I don’t have it. Even if the biopsies from the endoscopy/colonoscopy don’t come back positive for it, I am considering going gluten-free for a month to see if it makes any difference with my stomach issues.

One

Tree Top Fresh Pressed 3 Apple Blend. I already loved Tree Top juices because it’s 100% juice and they are from apples grown in the USA. (I’m leery of food products from China.) When I was having to be on clear liquids over the last two days, this particular blend helped me to get the foul colon-cleansing solution down and also helped to keep my blood sugar up.

Two

“No Longer Slaves” by Bethel Music. I shared this on my Simple Woman’s Daybook post for this week but I’m sharing it again because the song brings tears to me in a good way. I also don’t worship as effusively as the people in the video even when I’m helping to lead contemporary music at church.

Three

Chobani Greek yogurt. I am a fan of Chobani Blended Greek yogurt, especially their Coconut, Key Lime, and Lemon flavors. I’m trying to cut gluten from my diet to see if it helps with my stomach issues and these are gluten-free, making them a good midnight snack.

Four

This video on southern Californians and rain. I live here so I can laugh at this. I will say, however, that people were driving relatively sanely on the 10 this morning when we were heading to my procedure.

Five

Propofol This was my anesthesia during my endoscopy/colonoscopy this morning. I have no memory of the procedure and got a lovely nap out of the deal so I’m jazzed. (Good news: everything looks fabulous. Bad news: everything looks fabulous so we don’t have an answer to why I’m having trouble eating, having pain, and feeling nauseated.)

Go love up Jenna and the others.

FOR TODAY September 13, 2015

Outside my window… dark. It was in the 80’s today, a nice change from the 100+F weather we had last week!

I am thinking… about my wonderful grandfather whose 97th birthday is today. We lost him 9 1/2 years ago but he is still with me in a lot of ways.

Grandpa and me.

I am thankful… for the insane heat finally breaking. I miss decent fall weather in a place with 4 distinct seasons.

In the kitchen… ramen — no creativity tonight.

I am wearing… black v-neck shirt and black capri sweats. They’re functioning as jammies.

I am going… to try and get all my errands done tomorrow as I’ve got a crazy week.

I am wondering… if they’ll find anything during my procedures on Tuesday.

I am reading… The Alpine Xanadu by Mary Daheim. I finished The Alpine Winter by Mary Daheim this last week.

I am hoping… the bowel prep they gave me doesn’t make me as violently ill as the stuff they gave me 14 years ago.

I am looking forward to…subbing in the church office this week.

I am hearing… the whirring of my laptop. I think everyone else is asleep.

A Daniel story for today… He cleaned off my bed so he could jump on it. 🙂

Around the house… stillness.

A favorite quote for today… “One way to get the most out of life is to look upon it as an adventure.” — William Feather (This is how I tend to live my life.)

One of my favorite things… No Longer Slaves by Bethel Music

A few plans for the rest of the week: PT and bowel prep on Monday (I promise not to live-blog it), endoscopy/colonoscopy on Tuesday, working in the church office from Wednesday to Friday, meeting with Jon and my priest on Wednesday, and Episcopal Dodgers night on Friday. (It’s my first MLB game and unfortunately, I will be spending at the stadium of my team’s mortal enemies!)

Post Script… A dear friend of mine started a blog this week. Go visit her and show her some love! Do it now!

One

Air-conditioning. It was 102F here yesterday. It’s supposed to be equally hot (if not moreso) today. Need I say more?

Two

Mango sorbet. This was my treat from Trader Joe’s yesterday. It’s a lovely dessert or snack for days when it’s too hot to move.

Three

Bible study. Today was the first Bible study back after the summer break. We were missing some people but it was still good to see everyone.

Four

Marshmellow Dream bars. Think of them as Rice Krispies treats without the commercial sweetness and sold at $tarbux.

Five

Prevention Magazine. They have an issue on going gluten-free which I am reading in case my celiac test comes back positive.

Go love up Jenna and the others.

FOR TODAY September 6, 2015

Outside my window… dark and probably 75F. We’re getting to 100F or higher toward the end of this week. My mother-in-law refers to it as “county fair weather”. I refer to it as “Purgatory”.

I am thinking… about the blood draws I had on Friday and the tests coming up on the 15th and 16th.

I am thankful… that I’m not Kim Davis. She is sitting in jail AND the misguided souls at Westboro Baptist Church are coming to protest HER for causing gay marriage. (I couldn’t make this up if I tried!)

In the kitchen… sitting here eating a Cup of Noodles and drinking a Coke.

I am wearing… aqua shirt and capri sweats.

I am going… to IKEA tomorrow, I think, to keep Daniel entertained as it’s a day off of school. (I’m seriously hating three-day weekends right now.)

I am wondering… about if I have to do both of the colon prep things I got from the G-I specialist. They gave me a kit in the office and then I discovered a prescription for GoLYTELY when I was picking up another prescription at Target today. Given that I was puking the GoLYTELY up pretty violently before my last colonoscopy (14 years ago), I’m hoping that I don’t have to do that one!

I am reading… The Alpine Winter by Mary Daheim. I finished Lord of the Wings by Donna Andrews and read/finished The Alpine Vengeance by Mary Daheim.

I am hoping… for a good sedated appointment for Daniel on Thursday and that we don’t have to postpone again.

I am looking forward to… Bible study with my church ladies on Wednesday. I’ve missed them for the last two months!

I am hearing… the sound of the grandfather clock in the living room.

A Daniel story for today… Mr. Boy went to my room where I was unplugging the power cable for my laptop and climbed on the bed. I told him to go get his blankie and turn off his light if he wanted to come have cuddles… and he did! He fell asleep not long after.

Around the house… cats and humans going to bed.

A favorite quote for today… “It’s no use crying over spilt milk — it only makes it salty for the cat.” — Random Quote Generator

One of my favorite things… iced vanilla lattĂ©s made with whole milk.

A few plans for the rest of the week: PT on Tuesday, Bible study and my FIL’s birthday on Wednesday, Daniel’s sedated dental appointment on Thursday, and two gatherings on Saturday.

A peek into my day… I missed church this morning so I’ll probably be watching this later…

Some Wisdom from My Bible Reading Today

“No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them— the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough— so that they should live on forever and not see decay.” — Psalm 49:7-9

It brings to mind Christ’s death on the Cross and how I doubt I will ever fully understand the gravity and cost of it.

7 Quick Takes: AndrĂ© Rieu, Doctor’s Appointments, and the Kim Davis Debacle

7 Quick Takes

— 1 —

My newest addiction. I have become addicted to the music and performance videos of violinist AndrĂ© Rieu. He was the one who recorded Sir Anthony Hopkins’ waltz with his orchestra, the Johann Strauss Orchestra. He has such a joy and passion when he plays and conducts as well as the ability to have fun (conducting “I Will Follow Him” from Sister Act, for example). His YouTube channel is here. I also recommend anything involving him and South African musicians or the Harlem Gospel Choir as they get him dancing and jumping.

— 2 —

Because I apparently hate myself. I’m doing another plank challenge like I did in January. I hate doing planks but it is so incredibly good for my core. I’m also back to beating myself to a pulp on my core ball 2-3x a week to atone for my iced vanilla lattĂ© habit and my Coca-Cola addiction.

— 3 —

The week of epic medical appointments: Jen-style. PT went fine on Tuesday and my G-I appointment was yesterday. He recommended a probiotic called Align which has been shown to help IBS patients and ordered some bloodwork to test for various things like celiac disease (gotta love being Irish!). The BIG thing is that he ordered an endoscopy/colonoscopy for me and I consented to both. (I have PTSD from the prep for my last colonoscopy 14 years ago and refused one two years ago which, in hindsight, was stupid and could have illuminated some of the digestive issues I have.) The reason for both (and the abdominal ultrasound that I was supposed to have last month and got rescheduled to the 16th): I have IBS and a history of ulcers.

— 4 —

The week of epic medical appointments: Daniel-style. Daniel was supposed to have a sedated dentist appointment today but we had to reschedule it to next week due to some respiratory issues (coughing and needing breathing treatments). Instead, he and I went to a radiology place in Rancho Cucamonga to get some x-rays done on his legs for his orthopedist appointment tomorrow. (He wasn’t happy at having to wait but he was relatively cooperative when he was on the table.) I’m thankful that his teacher was chill with this and is fine with me picking him up tomorrow so that we can get to his appointment in Rancho on time.

— 5 —

Totally a good product for California. I’m wondering if people will start buying this in droves due to the drought.

— 6 —

The Kim Davis debacle. For those living under a rock, the Rowan County clerk in Kentucky has been ordered to jail. Kim Davis, the clerk, has refused to issue any marriage licenses to same-sex couples (and I think to any couples in general) and three courts have told her that she is required to do it based on what she was elected to do. Davis has refused based on her religious principles which are that marriage is between a man and a woman.

Here’s the problem: it’s an elected position so they can’t fire her. However, she is refusing to do the job that she was elected to do and the judges ruled on that basis. I understand her religious principles but I disagree with how she is going about this. If performing these duties is such an abhorrent thing to her, she needs to say, “I cannot uphold the civil law in these matters and for this reason, I am resigning my job.” That would be a statement that I think both sides would recognize and respect. Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina has even told her to do her job or resign which I think is interesting, given that Graham is against same-sex marriage.

Coming soon. I want to write something on my habit of prayer-walking in the morning but haven’t had the time to do it. (Silly kiddo wanting Mommy to pay attention to him!) I’m hoping to have it up in the next couple days.
