Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY September 17, 2012

Outside my window… hopefully cooling down. It’s the 16th straight day of 90F or above and in 4 days, we will have set a record.

I am thinking… that friends don’t let friends read bad Twilight fanfic. (50 Shades started out as a fanfic piece based on the Twilight books.)

I am thankful… that Jon brought me home a sandwich from Subway — even if I did have to fight the 4 furballs to eat it in peace. (3 guesses as to what was in the sandwich.)

In the kitchen… spinach salad with feta and a balsamic vinagrette for lunch today.

I am wearing… Old Navy flag shirt and running shorts.

I am going… to hope Daniel doesn’t flip out on my laptop before I finish this entry.

I am wondering… if I get geek cred for having the theme song to “The Big Bang Theory” memorized.

I am reading… Bossypants by Tina Fey. Because, you know, I’m so up on the latest trends. /sarcasm

I am hoping… to get some formatting done on the devotional book this week.

I am looking forward to… seeing my evil twin and hopefully my sister-in-law this weekend.

Around the house… *putting my fingers in my ears* I can’t hear you!

A favorite quote for today… ??We are not necessarily doubting that God will do the best for us; we are wondering how painful the best will turn out to be.?? — C.S. Lewis

One of my favorite things… sitting in a quiet chapel and listening to the birds sing.

A few plans for the rest of the week: Morning Prayer, working on the devotional book, and a barbeque with my evil twin and (hopefully!!!) my sister-in-law for the autumnal equinox.

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY September 3, 2012

Outside my window… sunny. Not too bad in terms of temperature — DEFINITELY better than triple digits!

I am thinking… about the devotions I’m editing and prettying up for a devotional book being put together by a friend of the family.

I am thankful… for Jon home today to watch Daniel while I ran errands.

In the kitchen… orzo with pesto, feta, and kalamata olives. (Going to go put the water on. Be back in a minute.)

I am wearing… Old Navy flag shirt and my Left Behind shorts.

I am creating… food and devotions.

I am going… to possibly take Daniel to the Sacramento Zoo tomorrow morning.

I am wondering… when our next rainstorm will be. (I love rain even if my body doesn’t.)

I am reading… Bossypants by Tina Fey.

I am hoping… tomorrow goes well and Daniel’s regressive behaviors cease.

I am looking forward to… Morning Prayer on Wednesday.

I am learning not to try and edit stuff once I’m exhausted.

Around the house… *puts fingers in ears* Lalalalalalalala… I can’t hear you!

A favorite quote for today… “My own experience is that when I first became a Christian, about fourteen years ago, I thought that I could do it on my own, by retiring to my rooms and reading theology, and I wouldn’t go to the churches and Gospel Halls; and then later I found that it was the only way of flying your flag; and, of course, I found that this meant being a target. It is extraordinary how inconvenient to your family it becomes for you to get up early to go to Church. It doesn’t matter so much if you get up early for anything else, but if you get up early to go to Church it’s very selfish of you and you upset the house. If there is anything in the teaching of the New Testament which is in the nature of a command, it is that you are obliged to take the Sacrament, and you can’t do it without going to Church. I disliked very much their hymns, which I considered to be fifth-rate poems set to sixth-rate music. But as I went on I saw the great merit of it. I came up against different people of quite different outlooks and different education, and then gradually my conceit just began peeling off. I realized that the hymns (which were just sixth-rate music) were, nevertheless, being sung with devotion and benefit by an old saint in elastic-side boots in the opposite pew, and then you realize that you aren’t fit to clean those boots. It gets you out of your solitary conceit.” — C.S. Lewis on hymns. (I had a portion of it on my mind earlier today.)

One of my favorite things… decent and authentic Greek food. Jon and I took Daniel to the Sacramento Greek Festival yesterday and it was awesome. Jon had some tiropita and I had an amazing gyro along with buying a dozen pieces of baklava which were the biggest I’ve ever seen. Daniel enjoyed parts of both the tiropita and gyro. He is developing good taste in cuisine even if he wasn’t impressed by the baklava. (Who doesn’t like baklava?!?!?!?!? Seriously!)

A few plans for the rest of the week: doing whatever tomorrow with Daniel, Morning Prayer on Wednesday and Thursday, breakfast date with Jon on Friday.

7 Quick Takes: More Olympics, Some Cookies, and Thoughts on the Sikh Temple Shooting

7 Quick Takes

— 1 —

My sleep schedule is completely knocked off from staying up and watching Olympic events. I’m totally jazzed that Gabby Douglas took All-Around honors, McKayla Moroney got a silver on vault, and that Aly Raisman cleaned up on beam (bronze) and floor (gold). I’d love it if the commentators would shut up about Jordyn Wieber not taking home anything but the team gold — she’s being totally graceful about it and I wish others would learn from her example. I’d also like people to shut up with all the criticism about Gabby Douglas’ hair and that she didn’t take home any medals in the apparatus finals. Unless said commentators can do the gymnastics these women (and men) are doing, they need to shut the duck up.

— 2 —

Speaking of Olympics, did you see the story about the 4×400 relay member for the USA who broke his leg and still finished his part of the relay? Dude… Manteo Mitchell, you are freaking awesome. Way to go regarding finishing!!! We still qualified in the 4×400 relay despite all this though I’m not sure who we’re going to get who can sub for him. Oh well… we’ll figure something out.

— 3 —

I saw my FNP on Monday and she figured out the source of my lingering ear pain. The raging ear infection was healed with some Augmentin last week but I was having lingering pain. Her examination showed that my ears were normal but that my sinuses were still inflamed and thus putting pressure on my ears. Some Sudafed and Flonase have taken care of it.

— 4 —

I haven’t shared my thoughts on the shooting at the Sikh temple in Wisconsin. I find this picture that was going around Facebook sums them up quite nicely.

Don't shoot people.

The blogging Tasoni of Coptic Dad and Mom also has some worthwhile thoughts.

— 5 —

I still have no regrets for not eating at Chick-Fil-A last week. I don’t feel that eating a certain restaurant’s food should demonstrate how well I treat my fellow human being. Regardless of how I feel about same-sex marriage, I also don’t believe companies should take political stances like that. Besides, I was sick and not feeling like putting myself out to drive 20 minutes to Chick-Fil-A even if I wanted to eat there.

— 6 —

It’s supposed to be 107 this weekend. I hate heat. I have to go out tomorrow for lots of errands but I think I’ll stay in on Saturday and enjoy my A/C. Did I mention that I hate heat?

— 7 —

My church has a booth at the Tuesday night farmer’s market in town for the next few weeks. This means that I’ll be baking a few batches of cookies this weekend. I’ll probably make the dough on Saturday and bake on Sunday while Daniel is down for his nap or something. I also have to package them with the pertinent labels that have our church’s contact info and service times. Oy vey…

FOR TODAY August 6, 2012

Outside my window… dark. It’s supposed to get to 106F this week.

I am thinking… that I wish I had time to be part of the Sacramento Choral Society. In case I wasn’t clear in my Quick Takes, I could pass the audition to join without a problem and I’ve sung a chunk of the repertoire for their first concert but… it isn’t meant to be this season. I just have too much on my plate.

I am thankful… for my weekend with my parents.

In the kitchen… nothing to speak of.

I am wearing… black ratty Arabic shirt and black running shorts.

I am creating… this entry and some crocheting.

I am going… to hope I can get some decent crocheting done on the way down to LA in a week or so.

I am wondering… how long it’s going to take to smog the car and replace the tires that need to be replaced on Friday.

I am reading… Death on Demand by Carolyn Hart which I finished during my doctor’s appointment today.

I am hoping… the pain in my ears goes down. My FNP says the infection in my ears is gone and that the residual pain is my sinuses being inflammed and putting pressure on my ears.

I am looking forward to… a fairly quiet week. Daniel was supposed to have a playdate tomorrow at Fairy Tale Town but I’m not up to taking him.

I am learning that I have to rest myself and not push myself too much when I’m sick with a sinus infection or anything else that is sapping my strength.

Around the house… dishes and vacuuming to do.

I am pondering… how to deal with someone who is seriously irritating me.

A favorite quote for today… “It is better to forget about yourself altogether.” — C.S. Lewis

One of my favorite things… Crystal Light peach tea.

A few plans for the rest of the week: car-related errands on Friday and making cookie dough at some point.

FOR TODAY June 18, 2012

Outside my window… sunny and hot but we’ve got a “Delta breeze” unlike the last two days when it was 105 and 100 respectively with no wind.

I am thinking… that I’m glad Daniel heads back to preschool on Friday even though we’ve had some fun while he has been on break.

I am thankful… for my secret trip to southern California to see my in-laws last week. My father-in-law was definitely surprised and it was the first time he had seen Daniel in 10 months.

In the kitchen… leftover pizza from yesterday’s Father’s Day dinner.

I am wearing… charcoal shirt and running shorts.

I am creating… stuff for Brett’s Blogathon 2012 and this entry.

I am going… to Target and probably Michael’s at some point this week.

I am reading… Sugarplum Dead by Carolyn Hart.

I am hoping… my neck/back pain goes away.

I am looking forward to… maybe doing errands tomorrow.

Around the house… unpacking to do.

I am pondering… things related to my faith.

One of my favorite things… quiet.

A few plans for the rest of the week: WIC appointment Thursday morning, Daniel starting school again on Friday, and hopefully a lot of unscheduled time.

FOR TODAY June 11, 2012

Outside my window… hot hot hot. 95F today according to Weather.Com.

I am thinking… that I need to cut off my hair again. It’s been almost 3 months.

I am thankful… for the mini nap I got today while Daniel was taking his nap.

In the kitchen… oatmeal.

I am wearing… old black Arabic shirt and black running shorts.

I am creating… things for Brett’s Blogathon 2012.

I am going… to probably be spending a fair amount of time inside this week because of the heat.

I am wondering… if I should do a theme for Quick Takes this week.

I am reading… Sugarplum Dead by Carolyn Hart.

I am hoping… to get Daniel potty-trained this summer.

I am looking forward to… this weekend. That’s all I can say right now.

Around the house… I have house help at the moment which is seriously blessing me.

A favorite quote for today… “There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, ‘All right, then, have it your way.'” — C.S. Lewis

One of my favorite things… Daniel waking up happy from his nap.

A few plans for the rest of the week: errands and hopefully some water play with Daniel.

A peek into my day… Snow drifts in Montana — I needed a reminder of cold stuff because it’s so bloody hot here.

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY June 4, 2012

Outside my window… dark. We had rain today. It was positively glorious even if I was walking to and from preschool in my pretty clothes to pick Daniel up in the midst of it.

I am thinking… that the rain and cold temps should have stayed longer. I enjoyed my afternoon in fleece pj bottoms and Daniel was extra cute in his lion jammies.

I am thankful… that the funeral at church went well and that the family catered the main food portions — we had at least 200 attending with probably 100+ of those coming back for lunch. The church ladies also came through excellently with dessert.

In the kitchen… funeral food! I baked butterscotch bars yesterday too.

I am wearing… blue old navy shirt and black running shorts.

I am creating… various things associated with Brett’s Blogathon.

I am going… to have to get swim diapers and a swimsuit for Daniel at some point tomorrow. Target ho!

I am wondering… if I will ever catch up on sleep.

I am reading… just finished A Trick of the Light by Louise Penny and Honeymoon with Murder by Carolyn G. Hart. I am going to start on the next oldest one I have as well as ask for the older ones from the library.

I am hoping… I get through all my plans tomorrow.

I am looking forward to… Ladies’ Night Out on Wednesday.

Around the house… a Cheerios tornado to be vacuumed up.

I am pondering… too many things to list.

One of my favorite things… chocolate frosting. I managed to snag some really good cake with a thick layer of frosting.

A few plans for the rest of the week: end-of-year program for Daniel tomorrow morning, last day of school and Ladies’ Night Out on Wednesday, probably story time at the library on Thursday, and a massage on Friday.
