Could someone please explain to me why so many people are going crazy about the Atkins diet? I mean, what kind of diet lets you eat a huge freaking steak with no guilt but won’t let you have an apple because the apple has carbs?

have you seen that fatkins squirrel cartoon?
yes i have. it is very cool.
yeah, well Mike lost about 75lbs on it the first time. Never done the diet thing myself, cause well I’m so slim 😉
– Peace
I’ve done it (or, well, a somewhat modified version – Protein Power. It helps keep my blood sugars under control – when I’m on it, even having the goodies like Atkins ice cream, my bG is right where it should be. And on the Protein Power plan, you can have that apple if you want – you’re allowed 30g of carbs per day at the beginning. Which means no bread, but fruits & veggies, particularly high fiber fruits and veggies, are allowed (you can subtract the amount of “dietary fiber”, i.e., the unsoluable stuff from the carb count of a food. So for that small apple, it has approximately:
13.8g of carbs, of which 2.4g are dietary fiber, leaving you with a countable total of 11.4g of carbs.
As much as it helps with the diabetes, I find it very hard to give up bread and pasta.
Lost some weight on the Atkins. Good because it was easy to watch one thing and I did find myself less hungry. However, I think the South beach version is much healthier [they are both, essentially, the same thing].
I think that the best one, however, is a little known diet called “eat to live.” It’s basically, fruit in the morning. A big salad with beans and a cup of carbs in the afternoon. And a big salad with two veggies in the evening. Meats, dairy and oils severely restricted to 10% of all calories. No restrictions on fruit, nuts, veggies or beans. For me, this is about direction. Still eat bacon sometimes.
I know I’m late in the game, but here’s how I lost a total of 85 lbs and 8 inches off my waist.
I gave up food made using highly processed flour
I gave up food made using highly processed sugars
I walk 3 times a day
I eat one meal in the evening
I drink something warm in the morning (does NOT have to be caffinated)
Why? Because 4 generations ago, that’s how my great grandfathers stayed fit. They ate a “continental” style breakfast (coffee, perhaps some cheese), they worked in various agrarian endeavours during the day, they eat heartily with their family in the evening – often a diet of chicken and or fish with a wide variety of vegtables.
It’s not Atkins, but it helps me understand how and why Atkins works. I was killing myself with too many processed foods — I’m not talking about going “raw” but rather avoiding alot of the highly manufactured foods. I was also sitting too much. By walking 3x a day, I keep my metabolism spiked w/out drugs — it has also become a big stress reliever, giving me much time to think, meditate and even pray.
“I mean, what kind of diet lets you eat a huge freaking steak with no guilt but won??t let you have an apple because the apple has carbs?”
It works because carbs and sugar are what leads to fat storage and not eating them allows the body to burn the fat that is stored.
