Entertaining People

Jan, a woman i my church choir and I were talking at Christmas and she and I decided that we really needed to do lunch after the New Year. Well… today was the day we finally got around to doing it and it was wonderful. I made Mediterranean Orzo (email me for the recipe) and Spinach Salad for lunch and she brought some Italian bread. We had a lovely talk and I showed her the wedding pictures. I actually love to cook and it was great finally having someone to entertain. As much as I like my alone time during the day, contact with people is really nice.

Friday Five

1. Do you like talking on the phone? Why or why not?
I don’t mind it but I don’t love it either

2. Who is the last person you talked to on the phone?
Jon

3. About how many telephones do you have at home?
3 (not including my cell phone)

4. Have you encountered anyone who has really bad phone manners? What happened?
My EVIL insurance company. I’ve been disconnected, yelled at, and sworn at.

5. Would you rather pick up the phone and call someone or write them an e-mail or a letter? Why or why not?
It depends on how urgent the matter is. If it isn’t urgent, email or a letter will work. If it’s urgent, I’ll do it by phone.

Not A Good Day

I had to wait 3 hours to see my OB/GYN this morning because she had to deliver a few babies. My cyst is gone thankfully and all is good with Jen’s health again.

I came home and found that my evil health insurance company will not cover Jon’s scalp cyst from 2 months ago because it’s a pre-existing condition. Yeah… one that he developed WHILE we were covered by them. I also finished the CARE application to send to the hospital.

Jon went to pick the car up from the mechanic and brought it home only to find out that it wouldn’t start. (There’s an electrical problem with a turn signal or something.) So… it’s being towed half a block to the mechanic and we keep our rental car (which was out-of-pocket) until tomorrow. This weekend, we depend on the kindness of strangers and on Monday (when the car had to be back in anyway), we get the turn signal replaced and hopefully the electrical system fixed. As soon as Jon is back from the mechanic, we’ll go to the post office to run errands.

I’m lucid and calm (right now) but I’m just wanting to have a few months of nothing happening.

Miracle of miracles

Elizabeth Smart found alive

This is pretty miraculous considering that almost no kidnapping yields a live victim at the end. I remember the Polly Klaas kidnapping in 1993 very vividly because she was a year younger than me and she was also from northern California. I remember the trial and the verdict. (The only case of the death penalty in California that I support is this one.) The picture on the Front Page of the paper after the verdict was Richard Allen Davis flipping a double bird at the camera.

Anyway… this is such good news. If it wasn’t Lent, I’d use the A (or H) word. 🙂

What’s Up with Jen and Jon Right Now

Basically, this is the timeline:

-April 10th: Jen does her panel interview for her candidacy committee. If approved, she applies to Luther and Trinity.
-August 1st: All final evals from Jon are due in.
-August 15th: Jon’s Internship ends. He might stay on as a pastoral assistant.
-sometime in August: Jon flies out to SoCal and goes through approval
-September: Jen starts school again, either at Trinity or Luther. Jon goes through “the draft”.
-October: Jon (hopefully) gets a call. With a call, he is ordained and either goes to small town in Minnesota (that is within 2 hours of the Cities) to join Jen or Jen and Jon move to new small town in Ohio that is near Trinity.

The thought is this: I’m about 75% leaning toward Luther and 25% leaning toward going back to Trinity. If I get into the M.Div program at Luther, I would start in the Fall and live on campus until Jon could move up. I would be away from Jon and the boys for at least a month and frankly, I’m not looking forward to being away from my menfolk (the cats AND Jon). We’d probably use our free round-trip on Northwest to let me visit or Jon could use it to come and check out congregations. (I would miss my Cat Cat and Pufferpie though…)

If I get into the M.Div program at Trinity, I would have to commute to Columbus daily (i.e Jon would have to take me) but we could probably work around that. Depending on where he gets called, I’d have to move onto campus at some point or I might be able to just commute if we could buy a second car. (*thinking wistful thoughts about financial aid*)

To be continued…
