Life as a Continuing Ed Widow

Jon is off doing his continuing ed, so I’m basically baching it for a few days. 🙂

Today, I realized as my gremlin started circling me (with a mean and hungry look even though her food bowl was full) that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to go get some cat food. Well… Jon is gone and has the car, so I could either attempt to tesseract myself to the store or walk the 7 blocks. I chose to walk. Well… along the way, several old men stopped to ask if I needed a ride (one of whose cars I actually approached — I’m feeling like an idiot because you NEVER are supposed to do that) and my glasses fell out of my pocket. As a result, I’m bat blind right now, but I have the funds to replace them and an appointment for Wednesday. (They were going to be replaced anyway once we got insurance.)

At the store, one of the stockers started talking to me and found out that I had walked to the store. His response: “You walked all the way from the parsonage?!?!?!?!” (I had to ask how he knew who I was. Turns out, he is the father of one of my confirmands and someone who I see every week at one of the churches. Uff da!) I got a lecture on how I should call people from the churches while Jon is gone so that I’m not stuck out in the cold getting pneumonia. (If I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard that, I could probably pay off the charges on my credit card from the antibiotics they prescribe for it.) He offered to deliver the cat food so that I wouldn’t have to carry it home (all 7 lbs of it) and I politely thanked him but declined his offer. After paying for the food, I walked to do some errands downtown and then headed home (where I found that my glasses had disappeared — stupid Jen!)

Tonight, I made dinner for one of our treasurers who read me the riot act when she found out that I had walked to the store. (Apparently, I could have called her at work and she would have come to get me. Oops.) It’s nice to know that I’m loved. I taught her about Excel and we also got some time to sit and talk. It was nice to get to talk to her and get to know her because she is one of the people who has really tried to make us feel welcome here. It’s also nice that my utter geekiness is a ministry tool!

About Jen

Jen isn't quite sure when she lost her mind, but it is probably documented here on Meditatio. She blogs because the world needs her snark at all hours of the night... and she probably can't sleep anyway.

  1. That’s the one thing I love above all else in MN: The way people look out for each other, esp. in winter. It’s a great place to live. (BTW, the Uff da was a nice touch; I’ve got a coffee mug with Uff da! on it — see, I’m really a closet Lutheran :-))

  2. Everyone here actually says it in their normal speech. It’s rather humorous at times.

Doug, there are two kinds of people: those who are Lutheran and those who secretly want to be Lutheran but can’t admit it because that would be showing pride and pride is a sin and sin is bad.
