Five Favorites: Literary Small Towns

Five Favorites

My brain is consumed with literary devices and plot details for a NaNo piece so you’re getting another meme. Yay!!! This one is created and hosted by the illustrious Hallie Lord of Moxie Wife. When you finish reading this, go congratulate Hallie on her new baby Charlie who was born on April 4th.

Anyway, here are five of my favorite literary small towns where I enjoy disappearing when I read.

Un

Alpine, WA. It’s a former logging town that disappeared when the mill closed in the 1920’s. Author Mary Daheim’s family lived there and one of her series of murder mysteries takes place in the town with the premise that the town would still exist today. I think the closest real place would be the town of Skykomish along US-2 going over Stevens Pass. Having lived in small towns, I can completely picture it in my mind’s eye and being a wannabe Washingtonian, it’s one of my favorite places to escape.

Deux

Partonville, IL. This is the fictitious town created by Charlene Ann Baumbich (who used to read this blog) where Dorothy Wetstra lives in the “Dearest Dorothy” books. It’s halfway between Chicago and St. Louis and other than Dorothy, the main characters are Katie Durbin, a city slicker from Chicago who moves there to find her roots, Katie’s son Josh, and a number of other townspeople. It’s another small town where I can picture the layout and I can totally see myself sitting at the counter at Harry’s Grill with Arthur Landers and acting mayor Gladys McKern.

Trois

Pickax. This is the small town setting of “The Cat Who…” mysteries by Lilian Jackson Braun. Local millionaire James “Qwill” Qwilleran solves mysteries with the help of his Siamese cats KoKo and YumYum. I can also see the offices of “The Moose County Something”, the library where Qwill’s beloved Polly Duncan works, the theater in the old Klingenschoen mansion where plays take place and the apple barn where Qwill lives during the more temperate seasons of the year.

Quatre

Colleton County, NC. This is the setting for the Margaret Maron mysteries that deal with Judge Deborah Knott. I would argue that these are some of the best murder mysteries you will ever read. She’s the youngest and only girl of 12 kids, married to a sheriff’s deputy, and step-mom to his son. I love reading about the cases brought before her and some of the places she is sent to fill in for district judges around the state. The stories about her family are awesome and I can get completely lost in one of the mysteries and picture myself there.

Cinq

Mitford, NC. I would be a bad pastor’s wife if I didn’t mention Mitford, especially as I have the Jan Karon books almost completely committed to memory and my copies are falling apart. Having been in a ministry position (well… psuedo-ministry because I’m not ordained), some of the things that Father Tim does show a lack of boundaries, codependency, and a host of other things… but it’s also its own place and you minister to the people you have in front of you. I have a mental image of Lord’s Chapel, Fernbank, the hospital, the rectory, and all the other places you encounter.

OK now… go congratulate Hallie and read the lists of some other people.

Outside my window… dark. We just got back from So Cal where it rained hard this morning, blew the car around going over the passes on I-5 between LA and Bakersfield. It was windy during most of the drive home and temperate when we rolled in around 7:45 p.m.

I am thinking… about way too many things right now which is why I’m blogging to empty my brain.

I am thankful… for our house sitter who shampooed our carpet in the living room. Can we say “going above and beyond the call of duty?”

In the kitchen… food brought home from my in-laws.

I am wearing… black Arabic “We will not be silent” shirt and navy blue “Left Behind” shorts.

I am creating… nothing at the moment.

I am going… to hope my packed week stays relatively quiet.

I am wondering… what my dreams will hold tonight.

I am reading… Maphead by Ken Jennings. I also finished a bunch of Mary Daheim “Alpine” murder mysteries this weekend.

I am hoping… for interesting dreams tonight.

I am looking forward to… my massage on Friday.

Around the house… unpacking to do.

I am pondering… too many things.

A favorite quote for today… “I must say my prayers today whether I feel devout or not; but that is only as I must learn my grammar if I am ever to read the poets.” — C.S. Lewis

One of my favorite things… Coca Cola.

A few plans for the rest of the week: Morning Prayer/editing tomorrow, Daniel’s well-child appointment on Wednesday, WIC appointment on Thursday, eye appointment and massage on Friday, and Respite Night on Saturday night.

A peek into my day… My in-laws’ new cat Tony.

Outside my window… cloudy with a chance of meatballs.

I am thinking… I have to stop biting my tongue.

I am thankful… that Daniel’s IEP went well yesterday. He has made progress and now that he can imitate, his learning can kick into warp drive.

In the kitchen… too many dishes to do.

I am wearing… purple shirt and Left Behind shorts.

I am creating… nothing at the moment.

I am going… to hopefully get adequate sleep tonight.

I am wondering… how I’m going to get the house clean for company next week if we’re going to be gone this weekend.

I am reading… The Alpine Uproar by Mary Daheim and Bread and Wine: Readings for Lent and Easter.

I am hoping… tonight’s episode of NCIS is good.

I am looking forward to… quiet when Daniel goes to sleep tonight. He didn’t take his nap so I didn’t get my necessary introvert quiet time.

I am pondering… various things.

A favorite quote for today… ??I can’t imagine a man really enjoying a book and reading it only once.?? ? C.S. Lewis

One of my favorite things… Cool Lime Refreshers from $tarbux.

Outside my window… dark. It’s only 6:30 but it’s better than it getting dark at 4:30 like it did a few months ago.

I am thinking… about the storms that they claim are coming in. Are they exaggerating or are we due for some catch-up for the rain that has been lacking?

I am thankful… for Daniel napping and for being done with the Proverbs 31 Project so I can get back to doing this meme.

In the kitchen… nothing at the moment. Pasta salad for the midweek Lenten supper come Wednesday.

I am wearing… my shirt from the Run for Courage and black shorts.

I am creating… afghan squares when my hands and wrists allow it. (It’s one of my Lenten disciplines and I’m doing badly at it because my hands have been achy.)

I am going… to hope that Edda decides to stop standing in front of my laptop screen. *looks sternly at Edda*

I am wondering… when this stupid cold will go away.

I am reading… The Alpine Xanadu by Mary Daheim — I’m re-reading it actually.

I am hoping… I sleep tonight.

I am looking forward to… Ladies’ Night Out tomorrow night and I’m hoping that people got the memo about the night being changed.

Around the house… *ignores the question*

I am pondering… various things internally.

One of my favorite things… ginger ale when my stomach is irritated.

A few plans for the rest of the week: working on editing devotions, Ladies’ Night Out, and whatever else comes up.

Outside my window… dark now but temperate today — maybe high 50’s or low 60’s?

I am thinking… about the calls I need to make tomorrow morning.

I am thankful… Daniel is home.

In the kitchen… dishes to do.

I am wearing… blue shirt and light blue striped pajama bottoms.

I am creating… afghan squares and blog entries.

I am going… to hope Daniel’s pediatrician hasn’t left UC Davis and we can get in with them next week.

I am wondering… about too many things tonight.

I am reading… Bliss by Kathryn Littlewood. It was a freebie on Friday and looked interesting. I also just finished re-reading The Buzzard Table by Margaret Maron and am of the opinion that I’ll be starting to stock my NOOK with her works because she’s so brilliant.

I am hoping… Daniel can go back to school on Tuesday.

I am looking forward to… Morning Prayer on Tuesday and my massage on Friday.

I am learning that self-care is important.

Around the house… vacuuming to do. Gah.

I am pondering… the Salon.Com article that all my pro-life friends were quoting this week. Having read it, I’m not quite sure where my heart and mind are with regard to it. On the one hand, the author *did* make those statements. On the other hand, I think a number of people missed the point.

A favorite quote for today… ??Crying is all right in its own way while it lasts. But you have to stop sooner or later, and then you still have to decide what to do.?? — C.S. Lewis

One of my favorite things… Coca-Cola. It is sooooo bad for me but I love it.

Outside my window… dark. Today had a high of 48F and we’ll get down to 29F tonight. I’m aware that the rest of the country is laughing at California whining about these temperatures but it’s actually not a good thing for our citrus industry.

I am thinking… about Vicki, Trace, and Cammi as well as the rest of Rick’s family as they bury him today.

I am thankful… for Rick’s life and the way he blessed mine, especially in the first couple years of Jon’s ministry when I needed a friend.

In the kitchen… I need to go grocery shopping.

I am wearing… charcoal grey shirt and fleece pajama bottoms. If only I could go to the grocery store like this. #firstworldproblems

I am creating… plans for Reece’s Rainbow fundraisers and patches for a stained glass blanket to auction off for Kaia.

I am going… to the store eventually tonight.

I am wondering… if people realize that if the science teacher at Taft Union High School had been armed on Thursday, there would have been one more casualty — the teacher disarmed the gunman by talking him down. The student that was shot is recovering.

I am reading… The Buzzard Table by Margaret Maron.

I am hoping… to get back to my normal self soon.

I am looking forward to… Morning Prayer tomorrow.

I am learning how to use Scrivner.

A favorite quote for today… “God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars.” — Martin Luther

One of my favorite things… purring tabbies.

A few plans for the rest of the week: Morning Prayer (hopefully) tomorrow and WIC on Thursday.
