You Know Your Cat Is Like A Child To You…

when you head out in blowing snow with zero visibility to get her sutures fixed after she has chewed them out.

Being the little gremlin she is, Freya chewed on her stitches and managed to chew the knot out of one. After trying to tie it again for 15 minutes with her howling, I called Rachel (her vet) and Rachel offered to re-suture her tonight if we’d bring her in.

The roads weren’t bad when we set out but after the suturing, it was pretty much zero visibility. We pulled off of the highway at one point… only to have a sheriff find us, tap on our window, and ask us why we were sitting in a ditch. When we explained that we had no idea where we were because of the blowing snow, he instructed us on how to get out and then had us follow him to our town. This was really good because all we could really see were his lights at some points.

My BAD little girl

Off to try and get Freya to sleep and then myself!

Bush Ads

The Bush ads are airing here in Minnesota. Apparently, we’re a “swing state”. This puzzles me because no Republican has ever taken Minnesota in a presidential election in my life time. About 80% of the people here are DFL. The state produced Paul Wellstone for pete’s sake!

Spaying

My girls both goet spayed yesterday and Freya got her rabies shot. We dropped them off at 8:15 and got them back again at 5. Both were really inebriated from the anesthesia when we got them home and I actually had Freya draped across my lap on the way. Freya mostly slept last night. Edda wanted to be active, but she had no control of her bladder (thank heavens for Resolve Pet/Stain Formula!) and she couldn’t walk without falling over. She did manage to escape the study and try to run down to the basement, but ended up falling head-over-paws down the stairs. After that, I wrapped her in a towel and stuck her on my lap. She slept and chilled for two hours with me and every time she’d wake up and get antsy, I’d just stroke her until she calmed down. She slept the night and was her normal lovey self this morning. Freya has actually been extra cuddly and lovey. (We think it’s the “maybe-if-I’m-nice-they-won’t-do-this-to-me-again” sentiment.)

The boys are very angry because the girls smell weird and they think we brought home two new cats. Cullen actually (true to his nature) has come around and started bathing the girls. Finian continues to be a hissy puss and I’ve tried explaining to him that if he hates how they smell, he should bathe them himself. CATS!

Church Today

A local high school youth choir (the Agape Singers) did worship for us today, so all Jon and I had to do was usher. (Now I have done every church role but celebrate the Eucharist, and that’s only because I’m not ordained and ergo not allowed to do it.) I hadn’t gotten to sleep until 3 am last night and had been forced to be somewhat sociable for the health fair before the service, so I really enjoyed being able to just listen. The kids did a fantastic job and it was wonderful to see 60 high schoolers who were on fire for the Lord. My favorite part was probably the Sunday School songs they did — some I knew and some I didn’t. The Kyrie they sang was also beautiful — and one I sang 11 years ago in my middle school’s Concert Choir! (Talk about a strange coincedence — I’ve had that piece in my head lately.)

The health fair went pretty well. I’d had some bloodwork done last week and wasn’t feeling like fasting, so I skipped all the blood tests. I was in charge of the worship walk — kind of like a cake walk but with juice boxes as prizes and some of my MP3’s instead of sappy kids’ music. I also got a neck and back massage — a very GOOOOOOD thing.

The MoveOn.Org Ads

CNN.Com: RNC tells TV stations not to run anti-Bush ads.

I think we’re scaring them. Who’s afraid of a few $50 donations to the opposing side? After all, the ads are being financed by 160,000 people who donated small amounts of money to run them, not simply the big donations of a few.

Mike: I found my copy of Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them and I’ll post the rebuttal for the 9/11 entries’ comments tomorrow.

The Whole Martha Stewart Thing

CNN.Com: Martha Stewart found guilty on all counts.

Can’t say I’m terribly surprised. She’s made so many enemies that I really doubted she was going to be let off. I’m not a fan (my mother-in-law is threatening to make WWMSD bracelets — What Would Martha Stewart Do — she’s a big Martha fan) and I didn’t really care all that much about following the trial. I have enough to think about with unpacking the rest of the house (no… we’re not completely unpacked yet — if you want to help me haul books upstairs and unpack and live near me, let me know) without having to consider how to arrange flowers for March, especially with four creatures who live to destroy anything that moves. I’m still trying to figure out how to decorate the house let alone make centerpieces for fancy dinners that I’m not currently having. I’ve heard rumors about how badly she treats her people and I have no desire to associate myself with any of that. Add on that we’re still paying off student loans and I can’t afford to do most of the stuff she does.

The reason that she was tried and even charged is that there has been a white collar crime wave lately and the federal government is making an example of her. She’s in the public eye and her actions are watched a little more closely as a result. She may have had an agreement with her broker to sell the stock or she may have lied — I don’t know and I don’t care. The government basically used her to prove the point that they will prosecute those who commit white collar crime.

The only thing that really disturbed me was the juror that claimed that “this was a victory for the little people”. ‘Scuse me? How is this a victory for the little people? Martha is a self-made woman. She was poor as a child and built her empire as an adult — if anything, she showed that one can make themself into something if they’re tenacious enough. THAT is a victory for “the little people”. Having her found guilty does nothing for “the little people” — she’s already ruined because she was even charged and put on trial. If only people weren’t so media-hungry that they had to give stupid soundbytes!

My $0.02 on the Same-Sex Marriage Issues Happening

**Usual disclaimer applies: my journal = my opinion. If you hate it, either skip this entry or respond politely. Hateful comments, flaming, and all manner of disrespect will be deleted and there will be some serious I.P. banning of the offenders. — The Management**

Before I begin my tirade, I would like to explain that I use the term “same-sex marriage” in place of “gay marriage” because it is more accurate. Not all homosexuals are male and “gay” generally applies to homosexual men. Feel free to disagree, but it is *MY* journal and I will use the terminology I find fits what I want to say.

If you haven’t heard about the situation in San Francisco, you’ve been living under a rock since Valentine’s Day or do not engage in any form of media consumption. Gavin Newsom, the new mayor of San Francisco, has gotten the county clerk to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples who want to marry and city officials have conducted probably about 3600 weddings at this point. The mayor of New Paultz, New York followed suit (though he was cited and faces misdemeanor charges) and Multanomah County, Oregon is starting to do this. This is really troubling to conservative Christians because the cities are condoning what they believe to be sinful and it’s an abomination to them. The most outspoken opponent of this (our psuedo-fundamentalist Christian president) has vowed to get a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

So what do I think of this? Well… firstly, I should probably affirm that I do indeed believe that homosexuality (actions not identity) is a sin and same-sex marriage is basically the state condoning something that I (according to the Scripture I base my faith upon) believe is sinful. So… putting it bluntly, I am against it. For those who want to say that I can choose to ignore those passages or that it was one man’s opinion, don’t waste your time on me. I can’t just pick and choose what I believe. I cannot find ANY Scriptural evidence supporting an argument in favor of it, even if I try to prooftext it. I’ve struggled with this issue since my first year of college when 10 of my friends came out to me. I have prayed about it and this is where I stand. C/S

Having stated where I stand on the issue of whether or not homosexualiy is a sin, I have a problem with what is happening in San Francisco, New York, and Oregon. You cannot just say that something is blessed and assume that God automatically blesses it. California *does* have a law against same-sex marriage that was voted in 4 or 5 years ago — I know this because I voted in favor of it. (And yes, I did seriously piss off a lot of my GLBT friends when they found out. They understood but they were upset.) This means that the mayor of San Francisco is openly defying the law. The California Supreme Court is pretty afraid to rule one way or another because they know fully well it would hit the SCOTUS and that would set a national precedent. The attorney general (whose job it is to uphold the law) is refusing to step in, probably a political move because they wouldn’t be re-elected if they were to intercede, nullify the marriages, and arrest Newsom. Heck, the mayor is doing this as a popularity ploy — it gives him the GLBT vote in SFO and you just don’t piss them off if you want to do anything in politics. The Governator is against this whole thing and (for once) he has a viable solution — make the same-sex unions the same as a domestic partnership. They have some legal rights (can visit their partner in the hospital, may be eligible for spousal benefits should their company’s insurance company be OK with it) but it isn’t the same as marriage, which would make the uber-conservatives a little less whiny.

As much as I am against the same-sex marriage wave that’s happening, I think the president’s proposal for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage is overkill and pandering to the uber-right wing people that seem to be his core backers. Trying to get a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage is like sending the National Guard in to break up a playground brawl — it’s massive overkill. We have the Defense of Marriage Act that Clinton passed — other states don’t have to recognize the marriages issued by the county of San Francisco. Heck, other counties don’t have to recognize them. Making this a constitutional issue violates the Constitution in itself: this is a states’ rights issue, whether or not people want to see it this way. I’m sure a constitutional amendment could theoretically pass (38 states currently have laws banning same-sex marriage according to CNN) but I really wonder if it’s needed. Other states can choose whether or not they want to recognize the marriages and the federal government can smile pretty and explain that they aren’t issuing new Social Security cards because it’s not a valid reason for a name change. (My prediction: the number of people filing full-out name changes will increase in SFO county.)

Not the most well-thought out response to all of this, but it’s where I am right now.
