CNN.Com: Thousands mourn Hamas founder

“There will never be any kind of peace or stability. This crime this early morning in Gaza is a dangerous sign for everybody, and we urge the American administration to interfere immediately to stop this escalation because no one is going to win.”
–Nabil Abu Rudeneh, Arafat spokesman and adviser

“The way [Yassin] was assassinated by the Israeli Apache helicopters and while he was in the early morning praying, without even respect to any of the villagers and to the beliefs of the Palestinian people. This was condemned strongly in the [cabinet] meeting, and it’s been decided that we will go to the Security Council, the United Nations.”
–Ahmed Qorei, Palestinian prime minister

“It is absolutely ridiculous to allege that the man who cannot see, cannot hear and who is on a wheelchair can constitute a threat to the biggest military power in the Middle East and one of the biggest in the world. That’s absolutely nonsense.”
–Hasan Rahman, chief Palestinian representative to the United States

“I do condemn the targeted assassination of Sheikh Yassin. Such actions are not only contrary to international law, they do not do anything to help search for a peaceful solution. I appeal to all in the region to remain calm and avoid escalation in tensions.”
–Kofi Annan, United Nations secretary general

“The position of the European Union has been consistently a condemnation of … killings. In this particular case, I think a condemnation ought to be stronger. These types of actions do not contribute at all to create the conditions of peace, the conditions of dialogue, which are necessary at this moment.”
–Javier Solana, EU foreign policy chief

“We understand Israel’s paramount needs to defend itself, but we also say for Israel to carry the full support of the international community it needs to do so within the boundaries set by international law. It’s been the long-standing position of the British government that such targeted killings, assassinations, are out with international law.”
–Jack Straw, British foreign secretary

And the statement from our [sic] fearless leader [/sic] is?

Famous Biblical or Literary Brothers

My mom is trying to come up with names for the kittens she is adopting and wants famous Biblical or literary brothers. I’ve given her probably 30 pairs that I could think of off the top of my head (and then cheating using the Bible). Anyone want to contribute to the effort? Leave me the suggestions in the comments.

This is Just Wrong

Boston.Com: All dogs go to heaven?

Bringing pets up to receive Holy Communion? Do I really need to list everything that is wrong with that!?!?!?!?!?

Guess we’re gonna start casting our pearls before swine before inviting them up to the altar…

There was a legend in the Middle Ages that if a bird flew into the church and ate the elements, it would turn into a bat. I shudder to think of what would happen to Freya if that were the case. She might turn into a real gremlin.

Freya

We had to take Freya in to get her stitches removed and the following conversation ensued:

Jen: Do you have the gremlin?
Jon: Yes I do.
Jen: She is such a savage little beast.
Jon: Yes, but she’s also such a darling little beast.

It was funny at the time as one does not usually associate the words “darling” and “beast”. Then again, Jon also does not have his hair attacked by 6 pounds of tabbage patch cat multiple times a day.

Interviews

Mom IM’ed me a few days ago to say that she and Dad were interviewing some cats that a friend was fostering. After Bessie’s death, I think she’s been lonely and my mother-in-law suggested that she talk to this friend and see if she knew of any leads on cats. The results were these three:

The three stooges

The black one seems very attached to Mom’s friend (who was responsible for getting them Trail Kitty) so I think he’s going to stay with her and they might adopt the other two so that they don’t have to be split up. (They seem attached to each other and it’s always wise to adopt cats in pairs.)

I’m happy for Mom — these seem like a good match for them and their current two seem to be OK with them. (Then again, boys generally are better than girls are about these things.)

If you…

1. …owned a restaurant, what kind of food would you serve?
Hmmm… probably stir frys (or is it stir fries?). Stir fry is always good. Or pizza. I can make good pizza if someone else will make the dough. I could hire someone.

2. …owned a small store, what kind of merchandise would you sell?
T-shirts. I would screen-print the coolest tees on the planet.

3. …wrote a book, what genre would it be?
I would write a novel. It would be a story about something interesting. Probably teen targeted.

4. …ran a school, what would you teach?
Art or something else fun. Maybe Adolescent Culture or something on developing ministry strategies, if there is such a thing.

5. …recorded an album, what kind of music would be on it?
Cool stuff. I can’t really sing all-so-well, so it would be humourous to say the least. I’d be more excited about doing the little booklet thingy for the inside of the CD case.
