The Simple Woman’s Daybook: January 15, 2017

For Today… January 15, 2017

Simple Woman's Daybook

Looking out my window… sunny and around 40F. It’s a nice change from mornings when it’s 15F when I leave the house with a high in the 20’s.

I am thinking… about various homework assignments that are due in the next week.

I am thankful… that my kiddo FINALLY went to sleep around 1 a.m. after tantruming on and off for almost 9 hours. #autismproblems #ADHDproblems

One of my favorite things… soft grey kitties like the one asleep in the cat bed on my desk.

I am wearing… a long-sleeved Cougars shirt and jeans. Church clothes this morning were a charcoal grey top, my black slacks, and my black boots.

I am creating…

I am reading… My Badass Book of Saints: Courageous Women Who Showed Me How to Live by my friend Maria Johnson. I got to know her through podcasting stuff on SQPN and am really jazzed to finally get to read her book after gifting it to a number of people.

I am hoping… to finish my book today in between all of the homework on my plate.

I am learning… how to get kitty litter out of the bleach receptacle of the washing machine and the fabric softener receptacle on the dryer. *glares at Daniel* (The answer involves a toothbrush, an F crochet hook, and a dust buster.)

In my kitchen… stroganoff for dinner tonight. Yay!!! Good leftovers this week!!!

In the school room… Daniel has a four-day weekend.

Post Script… So let’s talk about how many buses are headed to DC for the inauguration vs. how many are headed there for the Women’s March on Washington. (Hint: It’s not even close.)

Shared Quote…

My sentiments exactly.

A moment from my day… Our offertory hymn this morning in honor of MLK Jr.

Biden vs. Reagan

Some moron on Facebook made the claim that Biden receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction takes the value of the award down a few notches.

Then again, this person voted for T-Rump so I question their ability to form coherent thoughts.

Biden is worthy of the award. Want to know who isn’t?

REAGAN.

Let’s look at what each one has done:

Reagan
-screwed up the higher education system in California during his tenure by cutting funding to it and causing programs at various colleges to be cut which forced many students out of said colleges or made it more difficult to graduate
-screwed up the economy of the state
-ratted out actors/actresses to HUAC while he was in Hollywood
-sicced the California Highway Patrol on a college protest, killing one person and blinding another while injuring hundreds of others
-sicced the National Guard on UC Berkeley to stop anti-war protests
-screwed up the state economy as governor of California
-broke the strike of air traffic controllers, causing massive job losses
-the travesty of trickle-down economics
-raised takes by a third, screwing the middle class while cutting taxes for the wealthy
-tripled the national debt
-escalated the Cold War
-ignored the AIDS crisis, leading to thousands of deaths and infections of people
-the Iran-Contra affair

He gets no credit for the Berlin Wall falling (that was his successor) or Communism failing in Russia (that was all Gorbachev).

Biden
-overcame massive personal tragedy when his wife and daughter were killed by a truck driver and he had to be sworn in at his son’s bedside
-commuted 90 minutes each way during his 36 years in the Senate so he could be present for his kids
-floor manager for the passage of the Comprehensive Crime Control Act
-met with Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko to educate him about American concerns and interests, securing several changes to address objections of the Foreign Relations Committee in getting the SALT II Treaty ratified by Congress
-headed both the Senate Foreign Relations and Judiciary Committees
-spearheaded the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 which included the Violence Against Women Act
-negotiated with Republicans to pass large amounts of legislation including bills to help with the recession Obama inherited from Bush and the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act in 2005
-created a plan that foreign diplomacy experts say would have prevented the rise of ISIS by dividing Iraq into three ethnoreligious regions

Joe Biden has 44 years of positive work in DC. Reagan screwed up the state of California and was a sub-par president at best. I would argue that Reagan did not deserve his award while Biden clearly did.

7 Quick Takes: Lots of Politics and a Little School Edition

7 Quick Takes

Biden receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction. I’m sure that this is going to sound completely partisan and I *KNOW* that a majority of my blog readers will disagree with me on this but… he deserves it and has accomplished great things in terms of diplomacy and legislation. Very few former senators have the list of accomplishments that he has.

Here’s the video of the full ceremony. (HT: Laura)

The confirmation hearings. I thought this instance of Senate Minority Chuck Schumer trolling Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was pretty amusing. Given that it feels like Trump chose THE MOST UNQUALIFIED PERSON ON THE PLANET for every cabinet post, it’s some needed humor.

— 3 —

Women’s March on Washington. If you’re a knitter and you know someone who is participating in the Women’s March on Washington either nationally or on the local/state level, consider making them a pussy hat. I am hoping to participate in the March in Bellingham next weekend.

Update on school. I finished up my first full week of school today and feel like I’ll be able to make it through this quarter. My two online classes have assignments due on the same day of the week and my Accounting class is going to be fun. We’re doing merchandising businesses this quarter vs. the service-based businesses that we studied in the fall.

In solidarity with Kelly, I’m stopping here. 😀

Highlights of 2016

It has admittedly been a tough year for me in my personal life and in the life of our country but I thought I’d end this year with my highlights.

[+] The Warriors had the best record in the NBA and made it to the NBA Championships AGAIN!!!

[+] CLEVELAND LOST THE WORLD SERIES!!! (For those who aren’t aware, hating on Ohio sports teams is one of my core values after living in central Ohio for 2 1/2 years and dealing with Ohio sports fans hating on my teams.) My Warriors have been avenged!!!

[+] The Cubs had one of the biggest gatherings in human history for their victory parade. Not to mention, the Cubs winning the Series is so much of a BETTER ending than it would be if Cleveland had won because the Cubs have had the longer drought and were a much better team.

[+] I achieved one of my dreams of living in Washington when I moved up here in June 2016.

[+] Hillary Clinton was the first female to win the nomination of a major political party and won the popular vote.

[+] I was able to go back to school this fall, discovered a deep love of Accounting, and had a 4.0 for my first quarter!

[+] My Huskies made it to the semi-final game against Alabama!

[+] My Giants made it to the play-offs.

[+] THE DODGERS SUCKED IN THE NLCS!!!!

[+] MY NINERS HAVE A BETTER RECORD THAN THE CLEVELAND BROWNS! (Granted, they have the second worst record in the NFL but at least they’re better than the Browns.)

[+] I rocked the Write 31 Days challenge!

[+] I got a Fitbit (finally!!!!) and won a few challenges.

[+] I got to introduce my little beach boy to snow!

[+] I discovered that my school district here in Washington had a YUGE team ready to work with Daniel when we arrived. TWELVE PEOPLE were at the IEP meeting SPECIFICALLY for Daniel. His PT and OT were at his parent-teacher conference and are positively smitten with my little monster. 🙂

[+] I joined a FABULOUS parish up here. I’m seriously still being sustained by the joy from the Christ Mass on Christmas Eve night.

[+] Daniel WILLINGLY takes his ADHD meds without us having to restrain him. He just asked for peanut butter and meds. 🙂 (Granted, he asked for M&M’s two seconds after getting his meds but I’ll allow that.)

I’m looking forward to a FABULOUS 2017!

7 Quick Takes: Things I Resolve To Do in 2017

7 Quick Takes

— 1 —

Make healthier choices. I’ll be doing a plank challenge with some friends starting on January 1st and I’ll be trying to hit my college’s gym once I get over this stupid cold. I’m also going to try and cook more of my own food from scratch.

— 2 —

Annoy the crap out of T-Rump and his administration. I have the freedom to petition and I plan on making good use of it. 🙂 All of my favorite petition sites are locked and loaded and I have plans to attend a few protest marches.

— 3 —

Fill out a boatload of scholarship applications. I don’t qualify for grant-based aid because I already have a B.A. and I’d like to get as much of my Accounting program paid for without having to take out loans.

— 4 —

Get through as much of my Accounting program as I can. I am soooo excited for classes to start next week!!! I’m taking the second classes in my Practical Accounting series, a class on records management, and a class on Microsoft Word. The class on Word should be easy but I’ll appreciate that with two other classes.

— 5 —

Participate in Write 31 Days again. I have had so much fun in the last two years of participating in the challenge that I’d really like to do it again.

— 6 —

Finish some crocheting projects. I’d like to start some new projects but that means finishing some other ones first! First on the list to finish: my mom’s Christmas socks from last year.

— 7 —

Not eat any yellow paint. This one is a tribute to my friend Rick. He passed away four years ago and he used to resolve not to eat any [insert color] paint every year.

Pretty Floored

I heard about the electoral college news when a friend posted a screenshot of what Catholic Vote had sent out.

Proof that the election was won by ignorant rednecks.

My friend (a Republican until this travesty of an election) commented at how irritatingly giddy they were.

I would agree.

We’re getting a president with no actual governmental experience who is appointing his cronies to positions for which they are probably the least qualified person ever to hold them. I fear for the state of this country.

I’m just going to come out and say it:

The ignorant, uneducated, women-hating, racist people belonging in a basket of deplorables won. And if you voted for T-Rump (as a friend of mine has christened him), I hope your life falls apart irreparably in the next 4 years because of your dumb@$$ mistake. May God have mercy on your soul for the clusterf*ck you have unleashed on this country.

The Simple Woman’s Daybook: November 27, 2016

For Today… November 27, 2016

Simple Woman's Daybook

Looking out my window… grey and rainy. I love it.

I am thinking… about the accounting cycle review problem I’m working on. My Trial Balance numbers aren’t right and I’ll be pretty much starting over from scratch once this post is up.

**UPDATE** I GOT IT TO BALANCE!!!!!!

I am thankful… for a good time with family from Wednesday night to Saturday afternoon. My evil twin and his long-suffering wife were up and we had various people over for meals over Thursday and Friday. It was also fun to watch the Apple Cup with them and the UW completely trounced WSU. 🙂 I would have liked Michigan to have annihilated Ohio State but I guess it was an exciting game for those who watched it.

One of my favorite things… grey kittehs, especially the one sitting on my desk.

I am wearing… my indigo v-neck shirt and jeans. Church clothes were the v-neck with a black paisley skirt, my black cardigan, black tights, and my flats. My boots arrive from L.L. Bean tomorrow and I hope they fit!

I am creating… a two-column journal entry on scratch paper to try and work out my errors in the accounting cycle review problem.

I am listening to… the Advent playlist I created for this year.

I am hoping… I can get everything to balance for tomorrow.

I am learning… about employer taxes in my Practical Accounting class. Not too hard.

In my kitchen… leftovers or something.

In the school room… Daniel continues to do well in his program.

Post Script… this piece by Barbara Kingsolver is fabulous.

Shared Quote… “Stop, you all. I know where you all live and I’m not afraid to use you as a sermon illustration.” — a seminary classmate of mine in response to some good-natured teasing on her husband’s Facebook wall.

A moment from my day… The Annunciation/Magnificat portion of Holden Evening Prayer.
