{five favourites}: Miscellanea (LXX)

I usually do this link-up around Tuesday/Wednesday but my week got a little crazy. I figured I’d get my 7 Quick Takes up because they were pretty prominently on my mind and then link up here over the weekend. 🙂

One

The Parade of Nations during the Opening Ceremonies. I love seeing what the various countries are wearing because sometimes it includes beautiful ethnic costumes. They did not disappoint. The Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar had women who looked completely elegant and some of the nations that are part of Oceania had beautiful dresses and sarongs. I also loved the traditional-style dresses that the Georgian team was wearing even if their nation petitioned to have the costume changed. I was not enamored with the clothes Team USA was wearing and I think the women should have done the blazer-over-a-sheath-dress thing that many of the other western nations did. Those women looked very pretty and not like they were in some boring pants suit for a meeting.

Two

COPS. The show has been on since I was a kid but it’s addictive and it sometimes shows the lighter side of law enforcement.

Three

Jail. They film footage in jails around the country though Las Vegas, Portland, and various cities in Texas and Florida are the more popular ones. Sometimes, the inmates can be pretty humorous.

Four

Locally-sourced foods. While I live in town, it’s only about a 5-10 minute drive until you’re out in the fields. We’ve been stopping at little farm stands when we’re out doing errands and we’ve learned about some interesting things that are grown in the area such as tayberries.

Five

Robitussin Nighttime Cough DM. We’ve been fighting colds in this house for the least week or so and as it’s a chest cold, I’m definitely having problems breathing which lead to problems sleeping. This formulation of Robitussin has an antihistamine in it which is making me feel really chill. I’m hoping it helps me sleep.

7 Quick Takes: RNC Stupidity, Pokémon Go, and Baseball Commentary

*snickers* Someone has made a Pokémon Go app for moms called Chardonnay Go. In it, you can hunt for glasses of Chardonnay all over your neighborhood to collect. It’s not for me because I can’t drink but I can definitely see this being popular with other mamas this summer! (Yes, I know it’s a parody.)

Seriously, Cleveland? According to CNN.Com, guns are allowed at the Republican National Convention but tennis balls are not. There is an entire list of banned items and some of them make sense (bombs, lasers, grappling, hooks, and crowbars for example) while others are just stupid (ice chests and tennis balls). Guns seem to be missing from the “ban” list. Just because you *CAN* open carry in Ohio doesn’t mean you *SHOULD*, especially in a politically-charged atmosphere with large crowds of people.

I can conceive of this not ending well…

More Pokémon Go fun. The meditation garden at my Episcopal church in southern California is apparently a Pokémon gym and the statue of the Blessed Mother has many of the creatures gathered around it. Figuring that this was a good way to do outreach, the vicar attached a brace of VBS flyers around the neck of the statue. I’m wondering how many kiddos will be at VBS there this year because either they or their parents were playing Pokémon Go and happened across the flyers.

They needed some meddling kids. The FBI just closed the D.B. Cooper skyjacking case. Whether or not D.B. Cooper lived, he got away with it. The event meant that airliners now have doors that can’t be opened from the inside (the device is named after Cooper) and there have been episodes of shows like Leverage which have touched on the case in some way.

Prerequisite baseball take #1. Was anyone else wondering what the MLB was thinking with those UGLY uniforms for the All-Star game? I mean, seriously? Yellow and brown together like that??? And the lettering? I’m thinking that they need fire whoever came up with those!!!

Prerequisite baseball take #2. Anyone want to guess whose baseball team has the best record in the country currently? 🙂 Yep… that would be my Giants. 🙂 I should also mention that THEY ARE 6.5 GAMES IN FRONT OF THE LOSERS FROM LA RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!! Just sayin’.

One

Grey kitties. My parents’ grey kitty Homer really wants to be Daniel’s friend. Daniel is afraid of him. If Homer is on the bed passed out on my chest, Daniel will stay off my bed. Guess how I’m enforcing the expectation of Daniel sleeping in his own room? You guessed it — lots of Homer snuggles at night. Homer seems to be a fan. 😉

Two

The MLB All-Star Game roster. While I’d prefer to have the infield all be from the Giants, I’m happy that Buster Posey is the starting catcher. The best part about the ASG starting roster? NO DODGERS ARE STARTING PLAYERS!!!! #BeatLA #GoNationalLeague

You can also vote for the final player from each league to be added. My recommendation: Brandon Belt from the Giants for the NL spot. He’s a fabulous hitter and a good first baseman.

Three

Schuh Farms. They’re a local farm that Mom and I discovered while making a run to the county recycling facility with a load of paper and cardboard. They were advertising homemade pie and ice cream. We went back to find it a few weeks later and have patronized them a couple times a week since. I normally hate pie (I loathe pie crusts) but their cherry pies are amazingly good. We also got some cheese curds there from another local farm and they were good enough that they barely made it into the house!

Why I am thankful I don’t live in Mississippi… The mother of a little girl with type 1 diabetes was having a tough time getting Medicaid/CHIPS to pay for her daughter’s insulin and diabetes supplies (which cost ~ $2500/month) so she wrote to her state lawmakers to see if they could help. One of them, Rep. Jeffrey Guice decided to reply:

“I am sorry for your problem. Have you thought about buying the supplies with money that you earn?”

*facepalm*

Scottish insults to Donald Trump read by a true Scotsman. I’ll throw up a trigger warning for language and for negative Donald Trump content because some people don’t like reading that their presumptive candidate is a bloody moron. In any case, it’s incredibly funny and involves David Tennant.

The next night, there was some follow-up discourse on Brexit. Again, there’s a trigger warning for language.

I have mad skillz, yo! I took this lovely Buzzfeed skills inventory and got 81 out of 100 based on my inability to cook eggs (to which I am allergic), drive a stick-shift, change my own oil, and sew. My great-aunt Jean saw it on my Facebook wall, took the inventory herself, scored a 92, and left a note on my Facebook wall to let me know her score and that I need to keep learning these skills all my life. Yes folks, she’s she’s 93 years old and she’s on Facebook. She still lives on a farm outside of Kalispell, Montana and raises ornamental chickens to show. If I was close by her again, I would totally declare a girls weekend and road-trip across Highway 2 (through Glacier National Park) for some one-on-one time to learn the skills I don’t have which I’d love to have her teach me.

Required baseball take. THE GIANTS BEAT THE A’S. YAYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!! THE GIANTS ARE 6 GAMES AHEAD OF THE LOSERS IN LA IN THE NL WEST STANDINGS. YAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!

A well-deserved shout-out. I showed up for worship at my grandparents’ church here and the priest spoke before worship… well, actually she *chanted* before worship that the organist was out of town so all of us sitting the pews were the musicians for the day. The hymns were all very well-known ones and one of the choir members played the opening notes so we could at least start in tune. Rev. Helen is an amazing vocalist and she led us in chanting the psalm. I think the best part was the recessional hymn which was “Amazing Grace” and people were singing it in 4-part harmony. It was awesome to have people there other than myself who can sing and lead music!

7 Quick Takes: Assembling Furniture and Other Events This Week

Brexit. So the UK just voted to leave the European Union, Scotland voted to stay in, and Ireland is talking about unifying.

Yeah, I think the next Mad Max film will have something to do with the British Isles.

Furniture assembling. My IKEA furniture arrived on Tuesday so I spent Tuesday night and Wednesday assembling the furniture. I got 4 pieces of furniture assembled, managed to hammer a wire nail into one of my fingers, poked another finger with another nail, and hammered one of my thumbs. Given that my fingers are grumpy and stiff right now, my mom might want to hide the flamethrower for another few days until everything is assembled and my boxes are completely unpacked.

Prerequisite baseball take. The Giants are 6 games ahead of the Dodgers in the NL West standings. Just sayin’.

Required basketball take. I’m from the Bay Area so OBVIOUSLY I was watching the game on Sunday… and booing the Cavaliers like mad because LeBron James is seriously lame compared to Steph Curry and the Warriors still had a better regular season than the Cavs could ever hope to have. It was a close game to the last minute and I’m looking at seeing what the Warriors can do next year!

The Senate sit-in. Y’all, I’m proud of the Democratic Congresscritters for their sit-in (especially as it was for an actual issue instead of Ted Cruz’s filibuster which was purely for the sake of filibustering and not for any discernible reason) but seriously, singing “We Shall Overcome” was a bit too campy. Could you pick a more appropriate song?

Oooohhh… flannelgraph. The Babylon Bee story about Trump aides hurriedly teaching him Bible stories ahead of his meeting with evangelicals sounded a whole lot like the truth instead of satire. Again, just sayin’.

A big reason to move to Washington. It’s been chilly and rainy here for the last few days and every so often, I’ll look at my phone and thank my lucky stars that I’m not in northern California or southern California where it will be in the 90’s or in the 100’s in the next few days. I seriously prefer cold to excessive heat. I have found my tribe up here.

Simple Woman's Daybook

Looking out my window… hot hot hot. 90F at the moment and I can’t wait to move to a colder climate!

I am thinking… about what is on my plate tomorrow as far as packing up the contents of my closets as well as my clothes. There will definitely be laundry involved.

I am thankful… that lectoring went well this morning. I was “in the zone” and made it through with only one tiny mistake.

One of my favorite things… rain. So excited to head to Washington and have some. (We’ve been in drought for the last few years in California, last year pretty intensely.)

I am wearing… blue-green shirt and black shorts. I wore a wrap dress with a camisole under it this morning for church.

I am creating packing lists for the things I need to take north with me in my car.

I am reading… The Fear Babe still. I haven’t had a lot of time to read lately.

I am hoping… everything goes smoothly with the move.

I am learning… about various requirements for establishing residency in Washington.

In my kitchen… I’m heading to a potluck for choir in a few minutes so I don’t know what my parents and Daniel are going to be doing tonight.

In the school room… Daniel finished school last Thursday!

Post Script… Voting for the 2016 MLB All-Star game is still going on. If you aren’t sure who to pick, any player with “SEA” by their name in the American League or “SF” by their name in the National League are fabulous choices. 😉

Simple Woman's Daybook

Looking out my window… dark. It was in the 80’s today which is not to my taste as I hate hot weather and it’s only supposed to get hotter this week.

I am thinking… about the move.

I am thankful… for a nice dinner with family friends last night.

One of my favorite things… the San Francisco Giants winning and the LA Dodgers losing games

I am wearing… jammies. Today’s outfit for both church and afterwards was the same as it was Folk Choir Sunday which tends to be more casual with people wearing jeans. I went with a blue-green fitted tee from Old Navy and black capris from Kohl’s.

I am creating change-of-address postcards

I am reading… The Fear Babe: Shattering Vani Hari’s Glass House by by Marc Draco, Kavin Senapathy, and Mark Alsip. I haven’t gotten a chance to read this weekend but I’m enjoying the book.

I am hoping… Daniel sleeps through tonight and let’s me sleep in tomorrow morning. Getting by on an average of 6 hours of sleep a night is not doing good things for me.

I am learning… about all the disability services in Washington state.

In my kitchen… hamburgers tonight.

In the school room… Daniel’s last week of school. He finishes on Thursday.
