The Simple Woman’s Daybook: January 7, 2013

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY January 7, 2013

Outside my window… dark. It’s almost 2 a.m.

I am thinking… that the antibiotics might be working — I’m not in half as much pain as I’ve been in this week. (Stupid cat bite infection!)

I am thankful… for my awesome LCMS PA who saw me on Friday and gave me antibiotics. Apparently, all the stuff I was dealing with in December was in my chart or the providers talk amongst themselves because she knew all about Daniel’s illness last month. It was nice that she asked.

In the kitchen… dishes to do.

I am wearing… blue shirt and black sweat capris.

I am creating… squares for an afghan when my hand isn’t throbbing.

I am going… to hope I can get to sleep tonight.

I am wondering… about the true use of the word “engage” in theological practice and discussion.

I am reading… A Year of Biblical Womanhood by Rachel Held Evans — re-reading it after my long drive back from southern California. I tried reading Montana by Debbie Macomber and threw it in the back seat after 30 pages because it was crap. I lived in Montana for 4 1/2 years and I can’t say that I knew of any militias while I lived here, especially in Sweetgrass proper or the Sweet Grass Hills. I used to *work* in Sweetgrass — there’s nothing up there except a bunch of import brokerages, ICE, and Border Patrol. It would be the stupidest place to have a militia with that much government around.

I am hoping… that my citrus-colored tabby decides to come and hang out with me after I get this done.

I am looking forward to… NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles on Tuesday as well as Ladies’ Night Out on Wednesday.

I am learning patience and self-care. (I’m craptastic at both.)

Around the house… toys and Christmas stuff.

I am pondering… way too many things which is why I’m up blogging.

A favorite quote for today… ??Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of – throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.??
— C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

One of my favorite things… a half steak/half chicken burrito bowl from Chipotle

A few plans for the rest of the week: home with Daniel today (tomorrow), Morning Prayer on Tuesday, Ladies’ Night Out on Wednesday, and copy-editing the rest of the week while the bear child is at school or sleeping.

7 Quick Takes: Lots of Orphans, A Cat Bite Infection, and Harry Reid

7 Quick Takes

— 1 —

Prayer Request. I have an issue with my right hand that I *think* is a cat bite infection. It’s painful and swollen and my joints are really stiff. I can’t get in with my awesome LCMS physician assistant until tomorrow (Friday) morning at 10 so could you pray that whatever is going on would please not get worse before that point? Thanks!

— 2 —

Urgent diaper drive. A family “in country” adopting two little girls is having a diaper drive because their daughters’ baby house is too poor to afford enough diapers for all the kids and it’s at the level of a child getting one diaper per day. They’re raising funds to buy as many packages of diapers as they can to donate to them. If you’re interested, click here to go to the entry on Orphan Report with the Chip-In link.

Brett needs a mama. Brett is back on the Reece’s Rainbow website after the Basas were unable to complete his adoption due to his needs added to Dariya’s (“Delilah” on Reece’s Rainbow) being too much for his adopted family to handle. It was a painful decision for them to have to make and they are still really feeling the emotional repercussions of making it. On the other hand, watching them go through it means that I know better how to advocate for him. So… if you know a family who needs an adorable little boy who *loves* books, let them know that he is available.

Brett

Kaia also needs a mama. This is Kaia.

Kaia

She also needs a mama. Could you be that person? Click on her picture to learn more about her.

Giveaway for Katya. I heard from Hevel about a giveaway to help Katya, another little girl adopted from an orphanage, the dental work she needs. The prize is a $tarbux giftcard, some chocolate and peanut butter candy, and a beautiful flower pin.

What Harry Reid did yesterday at 5:03 p.m. while we were waiting for the House to vote. I pondered whether or not to link this because Lawrence O’Donnell was making it all “rah rah Harry Reid” but I thought the fact that O’Donnell talked about how Senator Reid was able to do it with the active though invisible help of Senator Mitch McConnell was cool. I still think Senator McConnell is a putz but it was refreshing to hear about how things actually *do* get done other than the public fights that the media reports.

One more prayer request. Please keep Jen Fulwiler (our usual Quick Takes host) in your prayers as she’s dealing with bi-lateral pulmonary embolisms. They just announced that they’ll discharge her and treat them at home but she’s still “standing in the need of prayer”.

The Connecticut Shooting

The second I saw the words “elementary school shooting” and “2 dead” on the screen, I turned the TV off yesterday. There are some things that just should not be broadcast on an endless loop and our media has the idiotic idea that it’s proper to interview kids in those situations.

I had already been sick for two weeks, seriously ill for three of them, not sleeping for three nights, and when I happened to see something about 26 people dead on Facebook, I completely lost it. Even better, I had to deal with Medi-Cal who completely… screwed up. (I’m trying not to drop gratuitous amounts of f-bombs like I did on Twitter yesterday while having to fix everything with Medi-Cal.) Yesterday was not a good day. (By the way, Daniel is fine in case you heard via Facebook or Twitter that we were having to get him in to urgent care to make sure he doesn’t have what I have.)

Do I have to even say how broken am I over the shooting? Someone posted the names of everyone killed and I started sobbing. I’ve had to hide status updates with the names of all the kids because the thought of kids just a few years older than Daniel dying is more than I can handle. I don’t think it’s a “mother” thing as much as I don’t think it would be so hard on me personally if I wasn’t a mother and if I hadn’t been through almost losing Daniel twice.

To the pro-life morons who decided to comment on how “20 kids died today but 2000 babies are aborted daily”: Did you ever consider that messages like that are why people ignore you and mock you? I’m totally pro-life here (unless the mom’s life is in danger or in cases of rape/incest) and seeing comments like that makes me want to vomit. Yes, it is tragic that 2000 babies are aborted daily (or whatever the statistic is) but 20 KIDS WERE MOWED DOWN BY A GUNMAN, ALL OF THEM SHOT MULTIPLE TIMES. These are actual human beings, not an excuse to advance your political cause. SHUT YOUR MOUTHS!

To Mike Huckabee: I’m almost ashamed to call myself a Christian after seeing your remarks about how this happened because we took God out of school. Actually, this happened because our country lacks adequate access to mental health, sufficient gun control, and our world is broken due to sin. I hope Fox News takes you off the air due to your insensitive remarks.

To everyone who has sent me a gun control petition in the last 24 hours: I agree 100% that we need better gun control and that the NRA are a bunch of right-wing nut jobs. However, THIS IS NOT AN APPROPRIATE TIME. Let the families bury their kids, let me stop sobbing every time I see the story mentioned, and then I’ll be more than happy to sign petitions, protest at the Capitol building in Sacramento, or do whatever I can for the cause.

To Westboro Baptist Church: I can honestly say that if you try to protest at *ANY* of the funerals/vigils/memorial services, there will be much pain on your part because folks do not take kindly to your crap when it comes to kids.

And because I honestly can’t string coherent thoughts together, I’ll just leave you with the song that’s been in my head since I first saw the news story yesterday:

7 Quick Takes: How To Survive the Next Four Years

7 Quick Takes

I’m guessing that a number of people doing Quick Takes this week are going to be writing about the results of the election and that the majority of you are not happy little pumpkins about Obama being re-elected. In the spirit of non-partisanship and because I was in your shoes 8 years ago, I’m offering some ways you can make it through the next four years.

Before we start, could you please take a look at the boy on my sidebar? His name is Brett and he needs a mama. Do you know who his mama could be? Go show him some love and spread his profile around. Please and thank you!

OK… first things first. Romans 13:1-7 (NKJV) says the following:

“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God??s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God??s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience?? sake. For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God??s ministers attending continually to this very thing. Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.”

You may not like that Barack Obama was elected president but it is your duty as a Christian to submit to him and praying for him is what Jesus would tell you to do. You might even find that praying for him softens your heart toward him and you’ll feel less resentment. It didn’t help me with George W. Bush but your heart might not be as hardened as mine is/was.

— 2 —

Bug the daylights out of your elected representatives. Your Congresspersons and senators were elected by you to represent you in Washington DC. This means that they need to listen to what you have to say and act according to your interests, so enlighten them as to what your interests actually are. Their websites have all their contact information. For those who need the URL, it is usually http://[last name].house.gov or http://[last name].senate.gov. Make them earn those salaries that they keep voting to raise! My thought is that if their staff doesn’t know you by name, you’re probably not bugging them enough. 🙂 Do be nice to their staffers though as many of them are college students doing internships and they don’t deserve to be treated like lightning rods for your frustration. Save that for your candidate’s appearances in your home district.

— 3 —

Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper. Your letter to the editor might be how someone learns about 40 Days for Life or that there is a crisis pregnancy center in the community. How do I know this? I’ve had a couple letters published in the Great Falls Tribune on the subject. One of them was actually clipped, copied, and handed out by the public health nurse for one of the counties in northern Montana where I used to live. (It probably didn’t hurt that she was the daughter of one of my husband’s shut-ins.) My point is this: opinion sections usually want to print a diversity of letters on a particular subject and would appreciate well-written letters expressing one’s viewpoint in a thoughtful manner. I’m sure the people putting those sections together would love to read something that isn’t from someone who is bat crap crazy.

— 4 —

Reassess the way in which you are fighting for your goals. Tell me, how is your fight against the HHS mandate going? Other than one Supreme Court verdict, I’m not seeing much in terms of change. I’m honestly not trying to be snarky in this particular Quick Take but I think it might not hurt to reassess the way in which you are going about this. You have an *awesome* cardinal at the helm of the USCCB — I follow him on Twitter and his letter congratulating President Obama on his re-election was excellent. You also have excellent law schools which train top-notch lawyers. Could the Cardinal’s people and the President’s people maybe get together and hammer this out? I know that I’m just a Lutheran pastor’s wife (who happens to be reading your Catechism as well as her own) but your approach really appears to be like the axiom about resentment — swallowing poison and telling the other person to die drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies. (It’s apparently a quote by Nelson Mandela.)

— 5 —

Keep some perspective. Unless I happen to occupy a different planet than most of you, the sun still rose and set on Wednesday. Yes, Romney lost but that doesn’t mean that you didn’t make a statement. The House is still Republican-controlled so whatever the President and the Democrat-controlled Senate want to do has to go by them. This means that Congress is not the President’s rubber stamp and he doesn’t have all the power — this is how the system is supposed to work. If we didn’t have the legislative branch to balance the executive branch and the judicial branch to balance the others, we’d have problems.

— 6 —

Keep your viewpoint visible. Keep participating in 40 Days for Life. Keep marching in DC for January as part of the March for Life. The mainstream media might not show it but pics on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram sure do. It is your right to peaceably assemble — exercise it.

— 7 —

Find ways to build bridges with those who disagree with you. Not all Democrats approved of the crass voting pictures from Planned Parenthood just as not all Republicans agreed with Todd Akin or Richard Mourdock on rape. The worst thing you can do at this point is generalize about people. I’m more than just a “lib”. I’m a mother, a daughter, a religious scholar, able to read multiple languages fluently, an activist for preeclampsia research, a Guardian Angel for Reece’s Rainbow, a voracious reader, an amazing cook, an enthusiastic fan of taebo, and most of all… A FELLOW HUMAN BEING.

This election meant exploring programs to aid the 47% with Thomas who is 180 degrees from me politically and we came up with some great solutions together. I’m a Guardian Angel for Reece’s Rainbow because Leila challenged me. I don’t think I would have found Brett without her and now finding this little man a family is on my to-do list every day. She and I are opposites but we can still work together for a common good.

I’m just here to say that I’m incredibly relieved at the outcome of the election because of what it means for me: not being able to be denied insurance for pre-existing conditions as of 2014. I’ve been worried about this for four years and some of the weight has been lifted from my shoulders.

My Quick Takes this Friday will deal with the election and I promise there will be no gloating.

The Simple Woman’s Daybook: November 5, 2012

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY November 5, 2012

Outside my window… dark. It was in the 80’s today which is so wrong in November.

I am thinking… of fasting from as much media as possible tomorrow. I kind of wish I had to work from sunup until sundown so I had an excuse not to watch.

I am thankful… for the weekend with my parents.

In the kitchen… dishes to be done.

I am wearing… preeclampsia shirt and running shorts.

I am creating… my NaNoWriMo pieace.

I am going… to try and get caught up with NaNo this week.

I am wondering… what the outcome of the election will be.

I am reading… A Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling.

I am hoping… my candidates win.

I am looking forward to… the election being over.

I am learning to stop being such a perfectionist with Daniel.

Around the house… *tuning you out*

I am pondering… how people can claim to follow Christ and be so hateful in their speech.

A favorite quote for today… ??The more he fears, the more he’ll hate.?? ? C.S. Lewis

One of my favorite things… sleep. I did not get extra sleep this weekend.

A few plans for the rest of the week: avoid media tomorrow, Morning Prayer and Ladies’ Night Out on Wednesday, and massage therapist on Friday.

A peek into my day…

Why you should vote.

7 Quick Takes: Some Baseball, Halloween, and an Exhortation to Vote

7 Quick Takes

The Giants swept the Tigers in 4 games, making them WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS!!!!! Serious love here for my homeboys again because they proved that they were not going down lightly. Two of those games were shut outs and Game 1 involved some Kung Fu Panda power as the Panda bamBOOMed a few balls out of the park. I wish some of these wins had come when I was growing up in the South Bay but hey… they’ve happened when I’ve been back in northern California so I shouldn’t complain.

— 2 —

The victory parade and celebration were… interesting. I was catnapping during part of it which made for trippy dreams. It was surreal, especially the people with balloons on them who were riding on Segways. There were so many sights that reinforced the weirdness of some of the members: Pablo Sandoval (the Kung Fu Panda) wearing red leggings and white Hush Puppy-like shoes), Brian Wilson going Rasta on the Giants’ cable car, and Sergio Romo being… himself. (You had to laugh at the policeman assigned to him in the parade because Romo left the convertible and was running around the parade route getting high-fives. That was a policeman with a major sense of humor — he was shaking his head and laughing.) In addition to the key to the city, the mayor also presented them with a golden broom for SWEEPING DETROIT!

— 3 —

My AWESOMESAUCE Halloween costume. I was going to go as a black cat (because, as the house panther on my chest would say, I have good inspiration) but my kitty ears disappeared so I took strips of glow-in-the-dark duct tape and put strips of it on my long sleeved shirt. My costume: Daniel’s “mummy”. It was both awesome and safe because the duct tape was visible in the dark and reflective so it was safe for crossing the street. I would have gone as a “tired blogger with a sinus infection” but Jen of ConversionDiary.Com kind of stole that idea. (OK… she had the same idea.)

— 4 —

Do you see the boy on my sidebar. His name is Brett. He has CP, is incredibly cute, incredibly brilliant, and he needs a mama!!! Do you know someone who might be his mama? Go share his blog URL and show him some love.

Because I am a sucker for punishment, I am doing NaNoWriMo this year. I haven’t “won” since 2009 but I’m attempting it anyway. (I got derailed last year by my little bear ending up in the hospital over Thanksgiving.) It’s a chick-lit/mainstream fiction piece called “How To Be a Perfect Pastor’s Wife” — I’m writing about what I know. It was either that or a murder mystery taking place at an import brokerage and involving cross-border stuff. As I have been out of the import brokerage world for 2.5 years now (which bums me out — I loved that job), the latter idea would involve too much research so it has been scrapped. I have a widget on my sidebar (below the Obama graphic) so if you were to go to just plain http://grace-filled/net, you’ll see it. I don’t remember if it has my word count or not.

— 6 —

They are preempting NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles next week. I’d rather watch my shows than election returns… hands down. Election returns don’t matter until the polls close. By that time, I could have watched 2 hours of freaking awesome forensic dramas. *grumps*

— 7 —

And finally… my public service message: GET YOUR BUTTS TO THE POLLS ON TUESDAY AND VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!! This is not THE MOST IMPORTANT ELECTION IN US HISTORY (kinda reserving that for 1860 and a few others) but it is incredibly important nevertheless. If you need help sorting through your ballot, the League of Women Voters is awesome for that and has LOTS of local chapters in a ton of states. (They’re non-partisan and exist to help like this.) If you’re like me and have already voted by mail or early voting, THANK YOU!!! If not, please get yourself to the polls. I’m not going to tell you how to vote (I know that there are probably people posting Quick Takes on why you should vote a certain way) but I will say as an American, it is imperative that you vote. We are blessed to live in a country with universal suffrage (as in everyone over the age of 18 can vote) where we can vote for whoever our consciences lead us to support. Please take advantage of this. /steps off my soapbox.

— Bonus —

Regarding Hurricane Sandy… Unless you happen to be in New Jersey or New York or someplace else that is ground zero for damage, donating canned food to the Red Cross is probably not the best idea. There are a huge number of ways to help: donating money is one but they’re also pretty desperate for blood. I can’t donate blood for medical reasons but if you are eligible at all, get thee to your local Red Cross!!! Those who are on the ground in affected areas, is there anything we can send you? Leave me comments.
